Geography

Satu Mare is located in Satu Mare County, northwest Romania, on Someș. The city is 13km from the Hungarian border and 27km from the Ukrainian border. The town is located at an altitude of 126 meters and is on the Lower Someș alluvial plain. The administrative limits border a total area of 150.3 square kilometers.

The city is located on the Someș Meadow, with both sides of the river flanked. The narrower point in which the town resides is found upstream and downstream. The field was flooded during heavy rainfall and had various geographical configurations on the outskirts of the city (sandbanks, valleys, etc.).

Spring’s average sits at 10.2°C, while the summers hover around 19.6°C. The humidity in the air is quite high. Rising winds from the northwest bring us rainfall during the warmer seasons. The Köppen climate classification subtype for this climate is “Cfb” (Marine West Coast Climate/Oceanic climate).

Name

The Hungarian name for Satu Mare is believed to come from the personal name Zotmar. The book Gesta Hungarorum says the 10th-century settlement was called castrum Zotmar, which means “town of Zotmar.” Satu Mare can be translated as “great village” in Romanian, and Moise Sora Novac coined it in the 19th century. Artur Stelian brought the name Sătmar into circulation in 1925, but following a decision from the Parliament of Romania, Sătmar was replaced by Satu Mare.

History

Findings from scientific research show settlements in the Oaș area dating back to many Stone and Bronze Age periods. The local Dacian population still lives there after the impact of Roman settlers. Menumorut’s land may have included the Satu Mare region later in his reign. One of his essential defensive strongholds – castrum Zotmar, probably dating to the 10th century – was at Satu Mare. In the year 1000, German settlers were brought to Hungary and settled on the outskirts of Budapest. They came at the request of Stephen I, a king of Hungary who was Bavarian princess Gisela’s husband and Hungarian Queen Regent from 1038 to 1041. Later, more German colonists from outside the Someș River arrived there, in Mint.

Satu Mare has been a royal free city since the 13th century, but they changed hands multiple times in the 15th century. The Báthory family took ownership of the citadel in 1526. They used the waters of the Someș to create a moat around the southern part of the citadel. This way, it remained an island with three bridges linking it to the main roads despite its vulnerability. In 1562 the fort was besieged by Ottoman armies led by Pargalı İbrahim Pasha of Buda and Maleoci Pasha of Timișoara. The Habsburgs then surrounded it, leading Transylvanian fleeing troops to set it on fire. After Schwendi’s order, Baldigara’s plans for the new citadel were implemented. The fortress would be pentagonal and have five towers, just as the Italians would have it.

Demographics

The population of Satu Mare has been decreasing by an average of .78% each year due to migration. The Romanian census from 2011 reveals that the city has a population of 102,441, denoting it as the 20th largest city in Romania.
