Sesto San Giovanni is a comune in Lombardy, northern Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Milan. Milan Metro’s M1 line passes through its railway station, which is its northernmost stop. Despite being a de facto suburb of Milan, the comune has the honorary city title. 

Before the 19th century, Sesto San Giovanni was an unimportant collection of buildings. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became home to several industries, including Falck, Campari, Magneti Marelli, and Breda. The population increased rapidly from 5,000 inhabitants in 1880 to 14,000 in 1911. Sesto’s population grew to 95,000 in 1981 due to many migrants from other parts of Italy after World War II. During World War II, Sesto was known as the “Stalingrad of Italy” because of its history of resistance to fascism and robust Communist Party presence.

Many immigrants have moved to Sesto because of its diverse industries and growing economy. Approximately 17% of the population is made up of immigrants, according to the 2016 census.

Most of Sesto San Giovanni’s larger companies closed their doors during the 1990s economic crisis. There was partial success in converting the town’s economy from steel production to service industries. Sesto is home to several large companies, including ABB Group, WIND Telecommunications, Impregilo, and Oracle Corporation.

Anis Amri, the perpetrator of the Berlin truck attack, was shot by the police as he fled the city on 23 December 2016.

In 1954, the city of Sesto San Giovanni was granted the honorary city title by presidential decree.
