Monastery of Jesus

– This breathtaking 16th-century building was designed by Diogo de Boitaca. You can survey it from the square in front and note the difference in outline between the nave and apse and the decorous buttresses with gargoyles.

Arrábida Natural Park

– One of the most important natural treasures in Portugal, Renatura is a protected space that includes the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. It covers the coastline from Cabo Espichel down to Sesimbra, 30 kilometers.

Quinta da Bacalhoa

– This estate is one of Portugal’s most beautiful 16th-century mansions. It’s on the northwestern corner of an Arrábida Natural Park, and since the middle of the 20th century, it has been a successful wine estate.

Mercado do Livramento

– A few streets up from the harbor is the divine Art Deco market hall, which opened in 1930. The Mercado do Livramento has appeared on lists of the best fish markets in the world and boasts signs to prove it. And just like any market, it can be hectic and overwhelming on busier days, with lots of (but friendly!) people walking by and shouting at you. But the traders are helpful if you ask them what the best deals are.

Praia de Tróia

– If you visit Setubal, take the ferry to Tróia. The beach is tranquil, with waves running into clear, calm water on a soft white sandy beach.

Igreja de São Julião

– Setúbal has a history of churches dating back to the 1200s, but much of the architecture can now be seen in the 16th and 18th centuries. One example is the side portal, which has intricate trefoil arches that give it a medieval feel.

Avenida Luísa Todi

– The central lane in Setúbal has a more traditional rhythm than the rest of the city. It is packed with attractions, but it’s relatively calm. It has many shops and restaurants, plus some of the best sites. Pedestrian walkways accompany the lane with lawns, benches, and fountains for occupants to relax.

Praia de Albarquel

– Located on the coast of Portugal, this is an attractive, very tranquil location with a beautiful coastline by the Ria de Aveiro. The long, wide golden sandy beach is peacefully visited by families and couples who delight at the generous green space redesigned in 2008. Come for a walk in winter. You can stop by the cafe, bring the kids to the playground and enjoy the tranquil views of Tróia, overlooking Cabo Carvoeiro Natural Park.

Casa da Baía

– This stately 18th-century mansion in the Avenida Luis Todi neighborhood is currently home to Setubal’s tourist office and regional foods promotion center.

Castelo de Palmela

– Barely 15 minutes north of Setúbal, this majestic castle is high on the Arrábida mountain and protects a narrow passage. It has been here since before the Romans, and this castle has seen countless battles throughout its history.

Estrada de Escarpa

– The Aspin walk is about a 15km route. It takes about an hour to complete and will seem longer because of the winding course. It traces the highest ridge in the Serra da Peneda, with views up to 500m, and it tops out at an altitude of 1400m.

Museu de Arqueologia e Etnografia

– This museum is very much set in its local environment, but it will open your eyes to the different historic industries around Setúbal. It features displays that go back to when people extracted cork, grazed cattle, and farmed salt to produce food. It also has sections about fishing.

Forte de São Filipe

– To the right of the Sado Estuary stands a fort built in 1582 to defend the city against raiding Barbary Pirates. The defense has an off-kilter star-shaped plan with protruding domed sentry posts and tunnels at different levels that visitors can explore.

Dolphin Watching

– Sailing the marina allows you to take a catamaran into the Sado Estuary and watch dolphins. The skipper will probably have a lot of experience, so there is excellent potential for seeing something!
