Setubal Overview

Setúbal is a city and municipality in Portugal with a population of 118,166 people. This places the area it covers at 230.33 km², with the town having 89,303 inhabitants (2001). Setúbal lay within the Lisbon metropolitan area and was an essential part of Al-Andalus in medieval times.

City information

Setúbal is a town in Portugal, located on the bank of the Sado River estuary – which is 48 km south of Lisbon. It is also the seat of Setúbal District and was formerly part of Estremadura Province.

One hundred years ago, Setúbal was Portugal’s leading fishing hub. In the early 1900s, it played a massive role in Portuguese sardine exports. However, with the passing of time and the advancements of technology, not one of those many factories has managed to stay economically relevant. There are many shipping ports, both traditional and super modern, that make city life deeply connected to the ocean and its water. Tourism is an excellent resource for the city due to the beautiful conditions that exist in and around it. The natural beauty and top-notch hotels, resorts, and infrastructure make it a perfect destination to visit on holidays. The city sits on the beautiful Sado river on one side and has panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. This city is connected with the nearby coast at the Arrábida Hills Natural Park. It also has beautiful beaches and unspoiled nature. A dolphin colony inhabits the Sado River, which empties into The Atlantic Ocean. The beaches of the Tróia Peninsula can be found on the south side of the Rio Tejo. As well as serving tourists and residents, this place has provided a location for several luxurious hotels and resorts to be built in recent years. The coastline of Tróia can be seen from Lisbon across the river. Albarquel, Figueirinha, Galápos, Galapinhos, Cairo, and Portinho da Arrábida are some of Lisbon’s many beaches on the north bank of the estuary at the very beginning of Arrábida hills.

History

Cetobriga was an essential settlement in antiquity. It was initially known as Cetobriga and eventually became part of the Roman province of Lusitania.

São Julião Church is also worth visiting. The 16th- and 17th-century fortress Castelo de São Filipe has been converted into a luxury hotel (pousada) overlooking the city.

Setúbal is famous for its industries related to paper, cement and concrete, agricultural products, and so much more. One of the city’s most iconic aspects is the people’s automotive industry. Several well-known companies have opened up assembly halls for the Portuguese market in days, and today there are only 3 Brazilian brands in production. The Port of Setúbal processed 6.058 million tons of cargo in 2012, making them the 4th busiest port in Portugal and occupying an impressive 7.4% of the country’s cargo throughput.” In the 1800s, St. Uses Bay was a hub for harvesting and exporting sea salt. Anyone in Australia knows that!

Is Setúbal worth visiting?

If you want to make a day trip from Lisbon or Sesimbra, Setubal is a good choice. It offers many different things to see and do, without the touristy feel of Lisbon. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, and it is a great city to experience typical Portuguese daily life.

What is Setúbal known for?

Today, Setubal is a thriving port city known for its world-famous Moscatel wine. The beautiful old-town center has well-kept streets, fountains, and gardens. The port area is the dominant part of town, giving it the feel of a flourishing waterfront city.

Is Setúbal a nice place to live?

The town of Setubal sits on the north bank of the Sado River estuary, forty kilometers from Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. It is also connected to the Arrábida Hills Natural Park, making it an ideal location to enjoy both city life and a nature-filled environment.

Best Things to Do in Setúbal (Portugal)

  1. Monastery of Jesus

    – This breathtaking 16th-century building was designed by Diogo de Boitaca. You can survey it from the square in front and note the difference in outline between the nave and apse and the decorous buttresses with gargoyles.

  2. Arrábida Natural Park

    – One of the most important natural treasures in Portugal, Renatura is a protected space that includes the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. It covers the coastline from Cabo Espichel down to Sesimbra, 30 kilometers.

  3. Quinta da Bacalhoa

    – This estate is one of Portugal’s most beautiful 16th-century mansions. It’s on the northwestern corner of an Arrábida Natural Park, and since the middle of the 20th century, it has been a successful wine estate.

  4. Mercado do Livramento

    – A few streets up from the harbor is the divine Art Deco market hall, which opened in 1930. The Mercado do Livramento has appeared on lists of the best fish markets in the world and boasts signs to prove it. And just like any market, it can be hectic and overwhelming on busier days, with lots of (but friendly!) people walking by and shouting at you. But the traders are helpful if you ask them what the best deals are.

  5. Praia de Tróia

    – If you visit Setubal, take the ferry to Tróia. The beach is tranquil, with waves running into clear, calm water on a soft white sandy beach.

  6. Igreja de São Julião

    – Setúbal has a history of churches dating back to the 1200s, but much of the architecture can now be seen in the 16th and 18th centuries. One example is the side portal, which has intricate trefoil arches that give it a medieval feel.

  7. Avenida Luísa Todi

    – The central lane in Setúbal has a more traditional rhythm than the rest of the city. It is packed with attractions, but it’s relatively calm. It has many shops and restaurants, plus some of the best sites. Pedestrian walkways accompany the lane with lawns, benches, and fountains for occupants to relax.

  8. Praia de Albarquel

    – Located on the coast of Portugal, this is an attractive, very tranquil location with a beautiful coastline by the Ria de Aveiro. The long, wide golden sandy beach is peacefully visited by families and couples who delight at the generous green space redesigned in 2008. Come for a walk in winter. You can stop by the cafe, bring the kids to the playground and enjoy the tranquil views of Tróia, overlooking Cabo Carvoeiro Natural Park.

  9. Casa da Baía

    – This stately 18th-century mansion in the Avenida Luis Todi neighborhood is currently home to Setubal’s tourist office and regional foods promotion center.

  10. Castelo de Palmela

    – Barely 15 minutes north of Setúbal, this majestic castle is high on the Arrábida mountain and protects a narrow passage. It has been here since before the Romans, and this castle has seen countless battles throughout its history.

  11. Estrada de Escarpa

    – The Aspin walk is about a 15km route. It takes about an hour to complete and will seem longer because of the winding course. It traces the highest ridge in the Serra da Peneda, with views up to 500m, and it tops out at an altitude of 1400m.

  12. Museu de Arqueologia e Etnografia

    – This museum is very much set in its local environment, but it will open your eyes to the different historic industries around Setúbal. It features displays that go back to when people extracted cork, grazed cattle, and farmed salt to produce food. It also has sections about fishing.

  13. Forte de São Filipe

    – To the right of the Sado Estuary stands a fort built in 1582 to defend the city against raiding Barbary Pirates. The defense has an off-kilter star-shaped plan with protruding domed sentry posts and tunnels at different levels that visitors can explore.

  14. Dolphin Watching

    – Sailing the marina allows you to take a catamaran into the Sado Estuary and watch dolphins. The skipper will probably have a lot of experience, so there is excellent potential for seeing something!

  15. Local Gastronomy

    – Many Portuguese cities’ food has links to the Atlantic Ocean, but Setúbal is especially noteworthy for its grilled sardines and fish dishes. Their trademark dish is grilled sardines, which goes well with a simple salad of lettuce and potatoes.
