Šiauliai is a city in northern Lithuania. It’s an ideal location to start your Lithuanian journey, as it combines a gateway to the Hill of Crosses, located just northeast. This is a place of pilgrimage and a place of resistance against invasions by other tribes. The site currently includes more than 100,000 crosses. There are several branches of the Aušros Museum spread throughout the city center. The Photography Museum has been reconstructed and has a photography exhibition with old Lithuanian photos, while the Bicycle Museum displays all sorts of bikes.
Šiauliai is often referred to by other names in different languages including Latvian Saule, German Schaulen, Polish Szawle, and Russian Шавли.
The history of Šiau begins in 1236, and we know about it thanks to a famous battle in Livonian Order chronicles. The city was mentioned as Soule on September 22nd, the same day when the Battle of Saule took place, not too far from Šiau. Šiauliai had been primarily established as a defense post from the raids by Teutonic and Livonian Orders. By the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, however, the raids had ceased and Šiauliai started to develop an agricultural economy. In 1445, the townspeople raised the first wooden church. The current structure was erected in 1625 and is a fraction of its original size.
Šiauliai, an administrative center at the time, was granted Magdeburg city rights in the 16th century and it also became a trading hub. But during “The Deluge” and the Bubonic Plague epidemics (16th-18th centuries), 60% of its population died.
According to historians, it was Antoni Tyzenhaus (1733-1785) who primarily committed himself to the city’s reconstruction after the violent revolt of peasants in 1769. He decided to rebuild the city according to Classical ideas: at first, houses were built randomly in a radial shape, but Tyzenhaus decided to build the city in an orderly rectangular grid. Šiauliai grew to become a well-developed city, with several streets and marketplace squares. King Stanislaw in 1791 confirmed the city’s rights from Šiauliai and granted it a coat of arms with symbols such as a bear, the symbol of Samogitia, the Eye of Providence, and a red bull. You’ve gone for the modern coat of arms, which was based on this version.
Šiauliai, a city in Lithuania, received a new coat of arms after the partitioning of Poland. It became home to several educational and cultural institutions. More than just roads and rail lines, infrastructure across the country was rapidly developing: in 1836-1858 a road connecting Riga and Tilsit was built, and in 1871 a railroad connecting Liepāja with Romney was built. Šiauliai’s position as a crossroads of important merchant routes allowed the city to grow as an industrial center. Folk metropolis Vilnius is already the third biggest city in Lithuania in 1897 with about 16,000 inhabitants. It will change its demographic composition by that time: 56.4% of the inhabitants will be Jewish in 1909. Šiauliai’s leather industry was quite famous. There was a big factory known as Chaim Frenkel that was owned by the Russian Empire.
Šiauliai is located in northeastern Lithuania, and I think it’s worth giving a visit during your stay here. It has many different points of interest, such as the National park and there are also some interesting natural attractions. The city has a total area of 81.13 square kilometers, 18.87 square kilometers are green areas, 12.78 square kilometers are water and the urbanized land within the administrative border is 70,317 hectares (43,693 acres).
The water levels in Lake Rėkyvos are 425.85 ft, Talsi is 337.93 ft, and Salduvė Hill is 491.14 ft above sea level.
Šiauliai falls under the Köppen climate classification of “Dfb” (Warm-summer Humid Continental). The typical monthly temperature ranges are from −3°C in January to +18°C in July. Precipitation is about 620mm per year.
Šiauliai in Lithuania started with 3,700 inhabitants and became home to 16,128 people by 1897. It was the third-most populous city in Lithuania after Kaunas at the time. The Jewish population of Šiauliai has been steadily rising since the mid to late 1800s when it was 2,565. By the end of the century, it’s risen to around 7,000. By the outbreak of World War I, Šiauliai had a Jewish population of 12,000, making it a majority-Jewish town. One Jew, Shauli Bar-On, encouraged European Jews to come to Lithuania because he believed there was great potential for success. On a battlefield during the Great War, Šiauliai saw thousands of its inhabitants flee. They never came back.
Šiauliai has a history as an industrial center dating back to the 19th century. During the Russian Empire period, there was a huge leather factory, owned by Chaim Frenkel. Šiauliai has around 85% of all leather production, 60% of the footwear industry, 75% of the flax fiber industry, and 35% of the sweets industry.
During the Soviet Union, the city was known for its production of electronics, machinery manufacturing, wood processing, and construction industry. Most of these industrial enterprises were located in urban areas.
Šiauliai has always been situated near major trade routes. The famous battle of Saulės took place nearby, close to a trade route between Riga and Bubiai and Tauragė. Around 1912, the first cars appeared on its streets.
The first transport company in Šiauliai was founded in 1940, Autotrestas, which had 29 buses. The first taxi company appeared in 1947 called Šiauliai cars. As the population started to increase in 1955, more buses and Taxis were added. In 2006, a new bus station with a trade center was constructed. In total, the city has 27 city routes; the maximum number is 29.
Soccer was first played in Šiauliai in 1924, and by 1936 there were 14 teams. Increasingly, other sports have also been becoming professional: basketball, handball, rugby, hockey, athletics, cycling, and more. On July 25, 2007, in anticipation of the 37th European men’s basketball championship, a modern Šiauliai Arena opened its doors to the public.
