It dates back to the medieval period when the Piasts ruled Poland—the first mention of it in documents dates back to 1253.

The communes of Siemianowice and Huta Laury were merged in 1924. By 1932, the new city had gained town privileges and was renamed Siemianowice.

In the present-day district of Michakowice, there was a skirmish between German saboteurs and Polish self-defense on September 1, 1939, the first day of the German invasion of Poland and World War II. German saboteurs entered the local mine, taking several dozen Polish miners hostage. In a fierce battle, Polish troops and volunteers, including members of the “Sokó” Polish Gymnastics Society and boy scouts, recaptured the mine. The Poles captured several German saboteurs, and both sides died. Soon after the Germans invaded and captured the city, six Poles were murdered by the German Freikorps on September 8, 1939. The German Einsatzgruppe I operated in the town in September 1939 and committed various crimes against the Polish population. There were two forced labor camps in the city during the German occupation: Poles (Polenlager) and Jews. The Germans also established a subcamp of Auschwitz concentration camp in April 1944, where over 900 people were held and forced to work. After the prisoners were taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp in January 1945, the Germans left the city, and the occupation ended.

In 1951, Michakowice, Bytków, Bagów, and Przeajka were incorporated into the city limits of Siemianowice.
