Sint-Niklaas is a Belgian city and municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality has three towns: Sint-Niklaas proper, Belsele, and Nieuwkerken-Waas.
Waasland, straddling East Flanders and Antwerp provinces, is anchored by Sint-Niklaas as its capital and largest city. Belgium’s largest market square is located in this city. A giant Christmas tree in Europe and the most significant easter egg in Europe once adorned this square.
Sint-Niklaas has some pre-Roman traces. However, during Roman times Waasmunster, better situated on the river Durme, was the regional center. It was already mentioned in a document from the 9th century. As a result of advice from the local clergy, the bishop of Tournai founded a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas here in 1217. In the middle of the 16th century, the new parish became independent of the See of Tournai. As far as politics are concerned, it was a part of the county of Flanders. At that time, Flanders’ power favored the rapid economic development of the city, which became the regional capital in 1241. Countess Margaret II ceded additional territory to the parish of Sint-Niklaas in 1248 with the proviso that it be kept bare, explaining the unusual size of the central market square today.
No wall around the city made it an easy target for conquest. A fire engulfed the city and plundered it in 1381. Although Sint-Niklaas is situated in the middle of the Scheldt, between Ghent and Antwerp, it was ideally suited to further development due to its central location. Emperor Maximilian had permitted the city to hold a weekly market by 1513. It was around 1580 when roving iconoclasts caused heavy damage to the church of Saint Nicholas. Much growth occurred in the flax and wool industries in the 17th century, which was generally a period of prosperity. During this period, Sint-Niklaas had administrative buildings and three cloistered communities (Oratorians, Franciscans, and Black Sisters), which provided educational, religious, and medical services. As a result of another fire, most of the city was destroyed on 25 May 1690. Sanchez de Castro y Toledo resided in Sint-Niklaas during this time.

Located on the east side of the Grote Markt square, this is the city’s oldest church. Over the years, the church has grown with frequent building phases and has five aisles and seven altars.
Belgium’s largest city square covers 3.19 hectares and has existed since Margaret II, Countess of Flanders, donated the land in 1248. As long as this space served the common good, she stipulated that it would remain devoted to the “common good.”

This pre-industrial windmill was built on land owned by the abbess of Rosenberg Abbey to give you an idea of its age. This mill was originally used to grind flour before being converted into an oil mill in 1696.
Surrounding the 16th-century Walburg Castle in the southern part of the old center is a freewheeling English park. Today’s castle serves as a bar restaurant with a terrace overlooking the moat.
During the interwar years, Sint-Niklaas’ textile trade peaked, which can be seen in the city’s splendid Art Deco architecture commissioned.
the exuberant Gothic Revival city hall dominates Belgian’s most prominent market square. A 49-bell carillon can be heard from the belfry of the Stadhuis, inaugurated in 1878.
The gallery houses the city’s art collection and has a dual appeal. In addition to Nero by Peter Paul Rubens, there are important works by Willem Heda, Lambert Lombard, Sebastian Vrancx, and Joos de Momper.
A vast network of paved paths connects the cities of Flanders, making it perfect for cyclists. With 720 kilometers of trails in Waasland alone, traversing this flat, green landscape has always been challenging.
