Sint-Truiden Overview
A city and municipality in Limburg, Flemish Region, Belgium, Sint-Truiden have more than 41.500 inhabitants, making it one of Limburg’s largest cities.
History
An abbey founded by a Frankish nobleman, St. Trudo, formed the municipality in the 7th century. Legend has it that Trudo was playing with some rocks as a boy while he was building a small church. One woman was blinded by sudden blindness after scornfully kicking over the rocks. After asking for his forgiveness, Trudo cured her of her blindness. Aside from springing water, he was also said to be able to cure other illnesses. After Trudo’sTrudo’s death, the abbey (the later Sint-Truiden Abbey) became the center of a pilgrimage that brought wealth to the neighboring town. During the 11th century, the population grew significantly and was particularly prosperous. During this period, abbot Adelardus, reporting to the prince-bishop of Metz, built the abbey’sabbey’s main church and two churches in town. In addition to the earth wall, Sint-Truiden received fortified gates and a wooden fence under his direction. In 1129, a stone wall, gates, and towers were constructed. New oppidum cities were based on the linen industry and commerce with foreign lands such as England, Champagne, and Germany.
In the 13th century, the fortified town became one of 23 bonnes villes (main cities) of the Bishopric of Liège. It is believed that a market hall was built where the current city hall stands, guilds organized social life, and a person symbolizing the power of local government was erected on the central square.

Franciscans settled in Sint-Truiden around 1226, and the Early Gothic church they built in the 13th century was replaced by a Baroque structure in 1730.

On a quaint farmyard in Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden in the south of the city, a brewery has been in operation since 1878. In the Bink beer line, Kerkom produces a dubbel, two triples, a blond, a bruin, an amber, an IPA, and two dark winter beers, to name a few.
