Škofja Loka Overview
Slovenian town Kofja Loka can be found in Kofja Loka. Upper Carniola is the economic, cultural, educational, and administrative center of Kofja Loka Municipality. The population is approximately 12,000 people.
Geography
Kofja Loka is located at an elevation of 354 meters (1,161 feet) at the confluence of the Poljane Sora and Selca Sora rivers, at the transition of the Sora Plain into the Kofja Loka Hills and the Polhov Gradec Hills. Town Square (Plac) and Lower Square (Long) are situated on river terraces in its old center. A plateau above the townhouses, Loka Castle, is home to the Loka Museum. Krancelj Hill rises above the castle (475 meters or 1,558 feet). There is a conglomerate rock hill called Kamnitnik Hill, which stands 414 meters (1358 feet) north of the city center. Virk Plain (Slovene: Virko polje), which stretches south of the town, is where the Poljane Sora flows before joining the Selca Sora. In the past, millet was grown here, so the name Virk is a corruption of German Hirsacker’ millet field’.
Name
From 973, Kofja Loka was known as Lonca (an allusion to Stara Loka), followed by Lonka in 1160, Lok in 1192–97, Scofolotti in 1293, and Scofioloco in 1295 (among other names). Initially owned by the Bishops of Freising, the word means ‘bishop’s (wet) meadow.’
History
Following the grant of the lordship of Kofja Loka by Emperor Otto II in 973, the town’s history was tied to that of the nearby ecclesiastical principality for the next one thousand years. For defense purposes, a castle and tower were built above the town. Later, the court became the residence of the bishop’s governor. It happened in the 11th or 12th century. Otto III granted privileges to the bishops, including the right to mint coinage and collect tolls. Market rights were first mentioned for Kofja Loka in 1248, and town rights were mentioned in 1274.
A wall was built around Kofja Loka in the 14th century. A fire broke out in the town in 1457 when Duke Jan Vitovec entered and burned it. An Ottoman attack occurred in 1476 against the city. Furthermore, the town was also plagued and burned during this time. Kofja Loka was the site of peasant revolts in 1488, 1492, and 1515. After the Idrija earthquake of 1511, Bishop Phillip destroyed Kofja Loka and rebuilt it. The Lutheran church was founded in Kofja Loka in 1526. In 1601, Protestant books were burned by the Counter-Reformation committee convened at the castle, and laws were passed against the new religion.
1660 and 1698 caused extensive damage to the town. After gradually becoming obsolete, the defensive walls and town gates were removed in 1789.
The Austrian duchy of Carniola annexed the Prince-Bishopric of Freising in 1803 during the German Mediatisation. Several years before the 1895 Ljubljana earthquake, Kofja Loka was the first town in Carniola to be illuminated with electric light.

Culture
The Kofja Loka Passion Play (Latin: Procession locopolitana) is a Slovene play that dates back hundreds of years. This penitentiary Passion play was performed each Good Friday until 1751 as part of the penitentiary Passion procession. In its current form, the text was written around 1715 by Capuchin Father Romuald (Lovrenc Marusič), based on an older tradition. Jesus’ suffering is presented in it. The play was resurrected in 1999 with amateur actors. Two reprises were held in 2000 and 2009, and there are plans for more.
