Vienna is the capital of Austria in Europe. It has a long history that includes music, art, and psychology. Famous people lived here like Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud. There are also palaces including Schoenbrunn, which is the most famous palace in Vienna. The MuseumsQuartier district is a beautiful area with many historical and current buildings set around Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The works they display are remarkable.
Slavic names in Pomeranian — Stolpsk, Stôłpsk, Słëpsk, Słëpskò, Stôłp— and Polish — Słupsk — may be etymologically related to the words słup (“pole”) and stołp (“keep”). There are two hypotheses about the origin of those names: either they refer to a particular method of constructing buildings on muddy ground with additional pile support, which is still used today, or they refer to a defensive structure on the banks of the Słupia River.
As a result of German occupation, the town was renamed Stolp with the suffix Pommern to avoid confusion with other places with similar names. The Germanized name of this settlement comes from one of five Slavic Pomeranian names. Stolpe is also the German name for the Supia River, sometimes called the city. This place is also known as Stolpe in Latin.
There were a few medieval settlements on the banks of the Supia River at a unique ford connecting the territories of modern West Pomeranian and Pomeranian Voivodeships with the region of Supsk. An island in the middle of the river became the site of a good, a West Slavic or Lechitic fortified settlement. The fortress was surrounded by swamps and mires, which provided perfect protection. According to archaeological findings, the good was built on an artificial hill, protected by a barrier of branches from the Supia tree, and had a natural moat. The area of Słupsk was part of the Polish realm during the reign of Mieszko I and in the 11th century.
According to several sources, the first historical reference to Supsk dates back to 1015, when King Boleslaus I the Brave incorporated the town into the Polish state. In the 12th century, the city became one of the most important towns in Pomerania, along with Gdansky and Wiecie. Two documents signed by the Pomeranian dukes Wartislaw III and Barnim I and their mothers in 1227, which confirmed the establishment of an abbey in 1224 and donated estates, including a village “in Stolp minore” and “in parvo Ztolp,” respectively, to the monastery, have been argued to contain the first mention. It has been identified as a late 13th-century or 14th-century duplicate of a document dated 1180 that mentions “Castellania Slupensis” and thus represents the oldest surviving record.
The Griffin dukes lost the area to the Samborides in the following years, and the following surviving documents mention donations made by Samboride Swietopelk II in 1236 (two documents) and 1240. A Johann “castellanus de Slupcz” is mentioned as a witness in the first 1236 documents. Schmidt believes this is the first mention of the gard since a castellany requires a gard. Interestingly, the first surviving document explicitly mentioning the gard is from 1269: it notes “Christianus, castellanus in Castro Stolpis, and Hermannus, capellanus in civitate ante castrum predictum,” thus confirming the existence of a fortress (“castrum”) with a suburbium (“civitas”). According to Schmidt, a capellanus was required to serve in a church, which he identifies as Saint Peter’s. Samboride Mestwin II mentions this church for the first time in a 1281 document, along with Saint Nicolai church and Saint Mary’s Chapel. 1276 is the earliest mention of Saint Nicolai church.
Regarding the government, Słupsk is an urban gmina and a city county (powiat). Most city boundaries are artificial, with only a few natural ones around Kobylnica and Włynkówko on the Słupia River. Since 1949, when Ryczewo became part of the city, its boundaries have remained the same.
Słupsk shares about three-quarters of its boundaries with the rural district called Gmina Słupsk, where the administrative seat is located (despite not being part of the district). South-west of the city lies Gmina Kobylnica, another neighboring section. Several areas within the Supsk Special Economic Zone are outside the city limits: for instance, a portion of it lies within Gmina Supsk, and others just outside (Debrzno, Szczecinek, Wacz).
At 54°27′51′′N 17°01′42′′E, Plac Zwycikstwa (“Victory Square”) acts as the city’s central point.
This city is located in a pradolina of the Słupia River, and there is a significant difference between the height of the city center and its western and easternmost portions. Compared to other cities in the region, Supsk is hilly due to its split by a river. Five square kilometers (1.9 square miles) of the city’s area are covered by forests, while 17 square kilometers (6.6 square miles) are used for agriculture.
There are plenty of natural water bodies in Supsk. Approximately twenty ponds are located within the city limits, mostly formerly meandering rivers. In addition, there are several streams, irrigation canals (generally unused and abandoned), and a least. There is only regulation of these watercourses in the city center.
The landform features visible within the city limits are generally little affected by human activity. However, a massive hollow in the northwest of the city was once a sand mine. Despite plans to build a waterpark in this area, these were abandoned, and the site still needs to be used.
The climate in Supsk is temperate marine, just as in other coastal regions in Poland. Compared to the different areas of Poland, the city is in a zone with very weak continental climate influences. Temperatures average 11 to 21 °C (52 to 70 °F) in July, the warmest month. February is the coolest month, with an average temperature of 5 to 0°C (23 to 32°F). A month’s average precipitation is 90 millimeters (3.5 in) in August, while a month’s average precipitation is 20 millimeters (0.79 in) in March. Between December and April, snowfall is always possible.
As a result of several large factories, Supsk has developed a developing economy. There has been significant growth in the footwear industry in the region, with exports to many countries.
The Scania commercial vehicles plant also plays a significant role in Słupsk’s economy, generating the highest revenue from all companies currently based in Słupsk. Western Europe is the primary market for the presently manufactured buses.
