Solingen Overview

Solingen is a city in Germany, located some 25 km east of Düsseldorf, along the northern edge of the region called Bergisches Land, and has a population of around 161,000 people. It was named after Solingen castle which first began construction during the 8th century.

Geography

Solingen, just southwest of Wuppertal takes up almost a quarter of the total area! Agriculture, horticulture, and forestry are some of the top industries in Solingen. The city of Cologne’s borders cover a total of 62 kilometers, its east-west distance is 39 kilometers, and its north-south measures more than 11.7 kilometers. The Wupper river flows through the city for about 27 kilometers. The city’s highest point at 276 meters is at the Light Tower in Gräfrath, and the lowest point at 53 meters is in the southwest of the city.

City administration

Solingen has five boroughs, each represented by an elected council that provides help with many aspects of city life. This includes planning and implementing important projects as well as deciding citywide policies.

History

Solingen is first mentioned in 1067 by a chronicler who called the area “Solonchon”. Early variants of the name include “Solengen”, “Solungen”, and “Soleggen” however, the modern name came into use during the 14th and 15th centuries.

A blacksmith’s smelter dating back to over 2000 years ago was found in the town of Solingen. This helps establish Solingen’s fame as a Northern Europe blacksmith center. Swords from this smithy have been found throughout Northern Europe, including in places like the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Great Britain. The quality of weapons from Solingen led all of Europe to trade them. The company has a long-standing history and remains popular today.

After a devastating plague in 1614-1619, the city of Solingen, Germany was attacked and plundered by troops from all sides, including Burg Castle which was destroyed. Eventually, the city fell to Sweden but they did not develop it further.

In 1929, the town of Ohligs in Prussian Rhine Province, 17 miles (27 km) from Cologne by rail north of Solingen, became part of the city. The town’s chief manufacturers were cutlery and hardware and there was an iron-foundry and flour mill. Other industries included brewing.

At least a dozen houses of Turkish families have been burnt down by right-wing radical right and neo-Nazi mobs in Germany’s five largest cities over the past decade. A helicopter crashed into a house killing three girls and two women, and injuring fourteen other people, including several children who were also severely injured.
