Western Hungary’s history is quite interesting, and it begins with the Roman Empire. Alexander the Great passed through Hungary in 275 BC, but it wasn’t until 64 AD that a province of Rome had been established. A city called Scarbantia was founded at this time, right where Sopron comes from today!

For a long time, Scarbantia wasn’t believed to be populated. It was only after Hungarian people started arriving that it was discovered to already be ruined. In the 9th-11th centuries, Hungarians strengthened the old Roman city walls and built a castle. The town became called “Suprun” after a castle steward who lived in the area at that time. In 1153, it was mentioned as an important town.

In 1273, King Otaku II of Bohemia occupied the castle. Even though he took the children of Sopron’s nobility as hostages, the city opened its gates when armies from King Ladislaus IV of Hungary arrived. The king rewarded Sopron by elevating their status from a small town to a regional center with county status.

Ottoman Turks in the 15th century ravaged Hungary’s capital, which was at the time controlled by Hungary. However, many Hungarians fled to Sopron, increasing its importance.

One of the key regions of Hungary, capturing the river Drava at Tarcal, was originally held by the Croatian Kingdom (1538–1867).

In 1676, Sopron was destroyed by a fire. The modern-day city was born in the following decades when Baroque buildings were built to replace the destroyed medieval ones. Sopron became the seat of the comitatus and this is how it looked in its early days.
