Suceava Overview

At the crossroads of Central and Eastern Europe, Suceava is the largest urban settlement and the seat of Suceava County, located in the historical region of Bukovina in north-eastern Romania.

Names and etymology

According to Moldavian chronicler Grigore Ureche, the city’s name derives from the Hungarian szcsvár (furrier, skinner) and vár (castle). According to Dimitrie Cantemir, who resurrected this in his book Descriptio Moldaviae, no historical or vernacular evidence supports this explanation. Another theory suggests the city is named after a Ukrainian river with the same name.

History

The present-day city of Suceava and its surroundings have been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The Dacian oppidum of the 2nd century also dates back to late Antiquity. While the Roman legions conquered several historical regions in Romania (especially Transylvania and Oltenia) during the late Ancient Age, Suceava (as well as the entire Bukovina region) wasn’t. Therefore, it became a part of the Free Dacian Kingdom during that period. According to Ptolemy, however, there were also two Celtic-speaking tribes in the region at that time, the Anacortes, the Taurisci, and the Germanic Bastarnae. During the late La Tène culture period, archaeological studies attest to the presence of Celtic-speaking tribes in Bukovina.

Cipriani peoples were successively invaded by East Germanic peoples (such as the Goths or the Gepids), Huns, Slavs, Magyars (Hungarians), Pechenegs, and ultimately Cumans after Rome fell. Over nearly two centuries (1388-1564), Suceava served as the residence of the Moldavian princes and the capital of the Principality of Moldavia.

Stephen the Great, one of the pivotal figures in Romanian history, died in Suceava in 1504. The seat was moved to Iași in 1565 during the reign of Alexandru Lăpuşneanu, and Suceava failed to become the capital again. In 1600, Michael the Brave captured the city as ruler of Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania, but he was defeated the same year.

Geography

Suceava is divided into two geographical areas: the hills (of which Zamca Hill is the highest) and the meadows of the Suceava river valley. The setting of the urban settlement includes two groves, Zamca and Capote, both located within the city limits. The main avenue connects Burdujeni, one of the neighborhoods, to the rest of the city, giving the area the appearance of a satellite city.

Climate

The summers in Suceava are pleasant, the winters are cold and snowy, and there is partly cloudy weather all year long. Temperatures typically range from 22°F to 77°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 6°F or rising above 87°F. It is best to visit Suceava in the summer, from late June to early September, for warm-weather activities.

Demographics

Suceava’s population in 2011 was 92,121, down from 106,138 at the 2002 census, making it the 23rd largest city in Romania.

Tourism

Over the past few years, Suceava has developed rapidly. Most of the town’s attractions date from its time as a princely capital (i.e., the Middle Ages). Several museums in the city proper include the Bucovina History Museum, the Bucovina Village Museum, Bucovina Ethnographic Museum (located in an old inn), and the Natural History Museum.

Sports

  • Football – ACS Foresta Suceava (Romanian: Asociația Club Sportiv Foresta Suceava), formerly Rapid CFR Suceava, plays in Liga III, the third tier of Romanian football.
  • Handball – Bucovina Suceava’s men’s handball team competes in the Romanian Handball League (Romanian: Liga Națională).

Education

The only university in the town (and the entire county) is the Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava (USV), founded in 1990. Nevertheless, the institution was founded as the Institute of Pedagogy in 1963.

Transportation

  • Air – Suceava International Airport (SCV) is located 12 km (7.5 miles) east of the city center in the small town of Salceda.

Is Suceava worth visiting?

Suceava may not be on the list of best cities to visit in Romania, but it’s a great starting point for a trip to Bucovina. There is also an impressive fortress here.

What is Suceava known for?

In the heart of Bukovina, one of Romania’s most historically rich regions, Suceava has numerous notable examples of its ancient past, including famous painted monasteries and old buildings, as well as unspoiled nature – Bukovina means “country covered by beech forests.”.

15 Best Things to Do in Suceava (Romania)

  1. Fortress of Suceava

    – Many defenses were constructed during the Ottoman Empire’s expansion in Moldavia during the 14th century. During the following centuries, Prince Petru II of Moldavia’s successors beefed up the fortress in Suceava.
  2. Painted Monasteries of Bukovina

    – There are several Romanian cultural treasures in Suceava County. You’ll find fascinating Byzantine architecture and exterior walls adorned with murals that have remained vibrant since the 16th century.
  3. Muzeul Satului Bucovinean (Bukovina Village Museum)

    – This open-air museum with dozens of actual historical buildings allows you to experience village life in the Bukovina region without leaving Suceava. Several homes in different styles have been transplanted from villages around Bukovina, along with an iron forge, a water mill, and farms.
  4. Mănăstirea Sfântul Ioan cel Nou (St John The New Monastery)

    – With a bell tower and blind semicircular arches, it was begun by Prince Bogdan III the One-Eyed and completed by Stephen IV. A silver reliquary decorated with scenes from the life of a Romanian saint from the 14th century serves as the monastery’s patron.
  5. Dragomir Monastery

    – Originally built at the beginning of the 17th century, this church 15 kilometers from Suceava has an entirely more rugged and warlike appearance. The castle of Dragomirna, nestled in oak and coniferous hills, was built when Ottoman raids were widespread, which explains its tall, plain defensive walls adorned with loops for arrows.
  6. Mănăstirea Zamca

    – Armenians have been present in Suceava since the Middle Ages after fleeing their homeland during the Mongol Invasion in the 13th century. Known for their commercial prowess, Armenians were also offered tax exemptions in the Moldavian Principality in the 14th century.
  7. Muzeul de Istorie (Bukovina History Museum)

    – In July 2016, the History Museum opened a brand-new layout in a Neoclassical building at Strada Stefan cel Mare 33. Suceava was the capital of the Moldavian Principality between 1388 and 1565 when Iași gained the privilege of being the capital.
  8. Biserica Mirăuți (St George’s Church)

    – Established by Moldavian Voivode Petru I in 1375, this Orthodox church is one of the oldest in the country. The newly built St John the New Monastery assumed that role when the building was sacked.
  9. Hanul Domnesc (Princely Inn)

    – Originally built in the 1600s, the inn is the oldest secular building in Suceava. Miron Barnovschi, the Lord of Moldavia, donated Hanul Domnesc to be converted into an inn for entertaining members of the court, distinguished merchants, and foreign dignitaries.
  10. Muzeul de Științele Naturi (Museum of Natural Sciences)

    – Located right in the Parcul Central (Central Park), Suceava’s natural history museum offers exhibitions from botany to entomology. However, the most accessible displays are the dioramas depicting Suceava and Moldavia’s wild world.
  11. Curtea Domnească (Princely Court)

    – This site on Bulevardul Ana Ipătescu may pique the interest of amateur archaeologists. The Moldavian Voivodes lived here between the 14th and 17th centuries.
  12. Gah Synagogue

    – The Jewish community in Suceava dates back to 1473, and by the beginning of the 20th century, the city had 18 synagogues and smaller Hasidic prayer rooms. Except for one, they were all lost during the Second World War and the communist era.
  13. Planetarium din Suceava (Suceava Planetarium)

    – Formerly operated by the Museum of Bukovina, the city’s planetarium now serves as a venue for young astronomers on rainy days. There is a Zeiss ZKP top projector in the main hall that can show 6,000 stars and side projectors that can display moving objects, such as Galileo satellites, the Donati Comet, and shooting stars.
  14. Cacica Salt Mine

    – If you’re looking for something unusual, head 40 kilometers west to Cacica, where Romania’s best salt is mined. Re-crystallization from brine takes place here, and salt is retrieved by hand along tunnels first dug in 1791. A tour of some of these tunnels lasts 2-3 hours, and there are 8,200 tunnels at this gigantic site.
  15. Marginea

    – Marginea is known for its black clay pottery and is just northeast of Sucevita Monastery. A 2,000-year-old technique of firing clay pottery is said to have been passed down from Geto-Dacian tribes.
