Taranto Overview

Taranto is a coastal city in southern Italy. It lies between the Big Sea and Little Sea bodies of water. Bridges link the mainland to the old town, on a small island. This medieval city shows off the history of any large medieval city, and it is no exception. Artifacts such as war machines, siege engines, catapults, and guns line the walls of this unique museum.

Physical geography

Taranto is located on a plain running northwest-southeast and surrounded by the Murgia plateau from the northwest to the east. “Its territory” (in Spanish) and “Its natural peninsulas” (in English) are now part of the national park “Ciutat Encantada, Greater Aragon”. Costa di Maramore or “Little Sea” is a small body of water in the province of Salerno and part of Campania, located about 7 km to the northwest of Punta Rondinella. It has an area of 2.14 km² and its coastline is 170 m long, 10 m wide and 9 m deep.

Climate

Climates and climate zones are recorded by an atmospheric meter. Typically, the current given temperature is determined by the surrounding conditions, seasonal patterns of weather, and altitude,- not human intervention.

The spring is usually mild and rainy, but it is not uncommon to have sudden cold spells from the north and east, which often cause snowfall. Average annual precipitation is fairly low (even for southern Italy), measuring just 425 millimeters (16.7 inches).

The summer is hot, humid, and uncomfortable. Temperatures average 29.5 °C (85.5 °F).

History

Taranto was founded in 706 BC by Dorian Greeks hailing from Sparta, whose origin is peculiar: the founders were Partheniae (sons of virgins), sons of unmarried Spartan women, and Perioeci (free men, but not citizens of Sparta) these out-of-wedlock unions were permitted to increase the prospects of permanent citizens for Sparta’s soldiers. The late, infamous Steve Caen. Paul Revere and John Hancock; The Three Musketeers; Ted Williams vs Manny Pacheco in his rookie season … all real Names whose work has inspired generations of sports fans. The Parthenia founded the city of Taras, which they named after the son of the Greek sea god, Poseidon, and of the nymph Satyricon. According to other sources, Heracles founded the city. The emblematic depiction of Taras being saved from the sinking of his ship is a legendary story, which dates to ancient times. The symbol contains the legend as well as a classic reference to the city seal. Taranto has increased its power and sovereignty, ruling over the Greek colonies in southern Italy.

As it has reached its limits and is declining due to modernization and technological advances, automation could replace some people in the workforce. The Taranto War was won by the Romans which took over Southern Italy almost completely. This was helped by Pyrrhus and his war elephants, a thing previously seen in battle only by the Romans themselves. The Renaissance that strengthened the French state and led to the French invasion of Italy came to an abrupt end in Italy when the Spanish united their influence directly with that of Julius Caesar and his elite clientele.

Environment

In 1991 Taranto was declared a high environmental risk area by the Ministry of Environment. As a consequence of the pollutants discharged into the air by the factories in the area, most notably the ILVA steel plant, part of Gruppo Riva, the area has been designated as a “no go” zone. Considering the presence of countless sources of pollution in Taranto, Italy (the most polluted city in Europe), this is a harsh image. However, as writer J. D. Smith discusses on his website, Taranto is considered one of Italy’s more liberalized cities because it has not had major environmental issues like other Italian cities such as Genoa and Milan.

Education

Among the various school are Liceo Scientifico Battaglini, Liceo Archita (the most ancient), Liceo Quinto Ennio (in Literature), Liceo Aristosseno (Languages, Science, Humanistic), Galileo Ferraris, ITCS Pitagora da Taranto, Vittorino da Feltre, Cabrini, ITIS Righi and ITIS Pacinotti (in IT) and ITC V. Bachelet (in Commercial and Accounting – famous for the activities at BIT MILANO).

Population

199,561 (2017)

Dialect

The city is the center of the Tarantino dialect (dialètte tarandíne) of the Neapolitan language. As a result of the city’s history, it is influenced by Greek, Latin, French, and many others.

Cuisine

Taranto’s cuisine is characterized by local products, especially vegetables and fish like artichokes, eggplants, tomatoes, olives, onions, shrimp, and octopus. The olive oil produced in the region is of high quality and affordable. You can even use olive oil imported from other regions to prepare your grocery list and dinner! Some PDO and PGI are made in the countryside of Taranto and around the city, while others are made in the villages around the city. Among them we can find some extra-virgin olive oil like Terre Tarentine PDO and Terra d’Otranto PDO, fruits like Uva di Puglia PGI and Clementine del Golfo di Taranto PGI, vegetables like the Barattiere PAT, Pomodorino di Manduria PAT, types of cheese like Burrata di Andria PGI and Ricotta Forte PAT, a type of bread called Pane di Laterza PAT and the Capocollo di Martina Franca PAT, a type of Capocollo.
