Targu Mures Overview
Located in Transylvania’s historical region, Târgu Mureş is the county seat of Mureş County. As of the 2011 census, it had 134,290 inhabitants, making it the 16th largest city in Romania. On the Mureş River, Romania’s second longest river lies.
Names and etymology
Târgu Mureş in Romanian is equivalent to Marosvásárhely in Hungarian, both meaning “market on the Mureş (Maros) [River].” Târg is the Romanian word for market, and vásárhely is the Hungarian word for marketplace. Marosvásárhely is often shortened to Vásárhely by local Hungarians.
History
The city first appeared in written form in 1332. The papal registry mentions it as Novum Forum Siculorum, New Szekler Marketplace, and Sekulvasarhel (Székelyvásárhely), which means Szekler Marketplace.
The Dominican church stood in place of its Fortress Church until the Mongol invasion destroyed it. Around 1332, the Franciscans started building a new Gothic-style church, which was completed in 1446. A Transylvanian parliament (diet) has met in the town 36 times since 1439. Sigismund of Luxembourg, King of Hungary in 1405, granted the city fair organization rights. King Matthias Corvinus gave the city its first judicial privilege in 1470, and in 1482 it became a royal settlement. Its monastery was strengthened by fortifications in 1492 under the rule of wayvoda (prince) István Báthory. As a result of Louis II’s birth, the Székelys beat the troops of Pál Tomori for not paying an extraordinary Ox tax imposed on them. The oldest Hungarian school in Transylvania was founded in 1557 by the Reformed Church College (i.e., Presbyterians). The Transylvanian parliament under prince John II Sigismund Zápolya accepted the free preaching of the word of God in 1571. A siege led by Giorgio Basta led to the fortress’s ruin in 1600–1601. The troops of Gergely Németh burnt down the remaining houses of the town in 1602, so on the advice of the mayor, Tamás Borsos, the fortress was reconstructed between 1614 and 1653. In 1603 when he liberated Transylvania from foreign dominance, Mózes Székely, the only prince of Szekler origin, visited the city.
Geography
Mureş is located in the valley of the Mureş River. From the Fortress Church, built in the 14th century, the city spreads over 49.3 square kilometers (19.0 square mi). It is located in the historical region of Transylvania and covers an area of 49.3 square kilometers (19.0 square mi). Transylvania’s Transylvanian Plain, Mureș Valley, and Niraj Valley meet at 330 m (1,083 ft) above sea level. Both banks of the Mureş river run through the city, but the downtown area and most districts are located on the left bank. Located at 46.5531°N 24.5984°E, the Corneşti plateau is the city’s highest point (465 meters (1,526 ft) above sea level).

It rains on average 143 days a year, most frequently in December with 16 days and least frequently in August, September, and October with eight days. Demographics
According to 2011 census data, Târgu Mureş has a population of 134,290, a decrease from 2002.

Sixty-nine thousand eight hundred twenty-five of them are Hungarians, forming the most extensive urban Hungarian community in Romania, surpassing Cluj-Napoca. Hungarians became a local minority for the first time in the 2002 census. Romanian and Hungarian languages are considered official in the city and used in public signage, education, justice, and public administration. It is common for bilingual signs and advertisements to be used only by companies owned by Hungarians when it comes to commercial signage and advertisements. In Mureș County, Roma people make up 6.96% of the population, which is considerably lower than 2.51% in the city.
Religious communities
Romanian Orthodox make up the largest religious group in Târgu Mureş, with 46.74 percent of the population being Orthodox. Reformed Christians (30.06%), Roman Catholics (13.50%), Eastern Catholics (2.60%), and Unitarians (2.58%).
Culture
The Palace of Culture concert hall is located in the heart of Târgu Mures. The Târgu Mureș State Philharmonic Orchestra performs classical concerts here every week.
Two companies are performing in the Târgu Mureș National Theater, Tompa Miklós (Hungarian language performances) and Liviu Rebreanu (Romanian language performances). Apart from the leading theater companies, there are also underground theater companies such as Yorick Studio and Teatru 74′.

Târgu Mureş is an essential center for general and higher education. Among the crucial high schools are Unirea National College, Alexandru Papiu Ilarian National College, and the Hungarian-speaking Bolyai Farkas Elméleti High School. In 1557, the Schola Particula was founded in Târgu Mureș, and at the beginning of the 18th century, the Reformed College was banished from Sárospatak.
