Tarnow Overview

Tarnow is the capital of the Lesser Poland Voivodes in southeast Poland. It has a total population of 105,922 and an area of 79 square miles. More than half its inhabitants live in small towns nearby, which help contribute to what’s typically considered urbanization even though it is farmland.

Names and etymology

The first recorded mention of Tharnow dates back to 1105. Tarnów was first mentioned as Etarnaw in a German text in the thirteenth century. It has since been influenced by the Slavic and German communities and Polish, Hungarian, and Czech settlers. The town is known by names including Tarnow, Greek Tyrnavos (also spelled as Tarnovo), Czech Trnov, Bulgarian Veliko Tarnovo, and Malko Tarnovo, in addition to different Trnovos/Trnowos in Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia, Bosnia, and North Macedonia. Tarnów comes from an early Slavic word trn/tarn, which means “thorn,” or an area covered by thorny plants.

History

In the mid-9th century, a Slavic settlement had been established on a hill close to the center of Tarnów. The Slavs are thought to be members of the Vistulans who came across the river. Since archaeologists found out the size of the gord was almost 16 hectares, it was surrounded by a rampart. There is no evidence of a settlement called Przemysl in the tenth century. The two-period entries are either likely mistranslations or not accurate. In the 11th century, a new gord was established on the Biała river. It was a royal property that, in the early 1200s, was given to a Benedictine abbey, Tyniec. For the first time in Papal documents, the name Tarnow was mentioned in 1124.

Tarnów has been around for a very long time. It was first mentioned in 1309 when the Kinga of Poland had a listing of all the miracles she accomplished. One of these miracles showed that a woman named Marta lived in Tarnów at the time. Since 1327, there have been pieces of land – villages, and towns – bearing the name of Spicymir. In 1328, King Władysław I, the Elbow-high, granted Magdeburg rights to Tarnów Wielki. In the same year, the construction of a castle on St. Martin Hill in Krakow was completed by Castellan of Kraków, Spycimir Leliwita. The castle is now ruined, and you can still see its remains.

In the 15th century, Tarnów became a state within a state ruled by King Casimir III. The family of Leliwa established themselves as one of the few members of this city-state’s aristocracy that survived this period and are still in power today. In 1348, Germans began to immigrate to the area which became known as Kraków and Nowy Sącz. It was during the 17th century that Scottish people started to migrate in huge numbers. In 1528 the exiled King of Hungary, János Szapolyai, lived in what was then the town. The town prospered during the Polish Golden Age when it belonged to Hetman Jan Tarnowski. The town’s population was approximately 1,200 in the mid-16th century, and it had 200 houses within its defensive wall (the wall was initially built during the 15th and expanded into the 16th century). In 1467, the city of Minsk was founded, becoming a thriving trading hub in Eastern Europe. In the 16th century, Warsaw and nearby Tarnów town had up to twelve guilds. The town’s schoolhouse, synagogue, Calvinist prayer house, and various churches offered religious and cultural activities to their attendees.

Geography

Tarnów has been the capital of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship since 1999. It lies on the Dunajec and Biała rivers, at 72.4 km2 (28 sq mi). The city has been divided into 16 districts, known in Polish as “single.” Mościce is a district in the west of Kraków. The area features old buildings, one of which was even named after President Ignacy Mościcki.

Climate

Tarnów’s climate is classified by Köppen as Cfb, making it one of the warmest cities in Poland. Of course, the average temperature in January is low during this time of the year, and it gradually gets higher throughout the winter. The average temperature in July remains high for a whole year. Still, that’s enough for us to enjoy our most extended summer in Poland, consisting of 118 days with warm temps.

Economy

Tarnow is an important economic and industrial center. The city has chemical plants, including Zakłady Azotowe w Tarnowie-Mościcach S.A., which is part of Poland’s biggest company operating within the chemical sector Grupa Azoty, Becker Farby Przemysłowe Sp. z o.o., Summit Packaging Polska Sp. z o.o Leier Polska S.A., Bruk-Bet, Spółdzielnia “Tarnowska Odzież, Tarnospin, Tarkonfex,” and several warehouses, as well as a distribution center of the Lidl supermarket chain. Tarnów is the center of the natural gas production industry. Gas customers are the headquarters of three corporations, including Gaz-Systems, Stal-Centrica, and PGNiG.

Another company in Tarnów is Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów, a defense-industrial concern that produces handguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and anti-air guns. It is part of the state-controlled Bumar Corporation.

Tarnovo is a shopping mall in the city of Tarnów. It has a significant department store and multiple clothing stores and is home to Gemini Park, Europe’s largest shopping center.

Transport

Tarnów is a hub on the A4-PL.SVG motorway, along with another major road, National Route 73. These two are essential for travel in Poland. In addition, the city is a rail junction with four lines: three main electrified routes (westward to Kraków, eastward to Dębica, and southward to Nowy Sącz), as well as a secondary-importance local connection to Szczecin. Rail transport in Tarnów can be traced back to 1856 when the Galician Railway of Archduke Charles Louis reached the city. Tarnów Main Station was completed in 1906. It is an architectural complex reminiscent of the Lviv railway station in techniques and style. Art lovers have been introduced to some fantastic local artists thanks to Tarnów’s ever-expanding art gallery. Not only this, but there are three additional Tarnów stations as well: Tarnów Mościce, Tarnów Północny, and the newest addition, Tarnów Klikowa.

Tarnów has a public transport system that consists of 29 municipal bus routes. The city once had an extensive tram network but was replaced by buses in the early 20th century.

Politics

Members of Parliament elected in Tarnów in 2005 included Urszula Augustyn, PO, Edward Czesak, PiS, Aleksander Grad, PO, Barbara Marianowska, PiS, Józef Rojek from the P.O. party and Wiesław Woda from the PSL party. A European Parliament Member elected in 2007 and a Polish diplomat in New York City was Urszula Gacek. She is a member of the conservative European People’s Party/European Democrats party (EPP/ED).

Tourism

Tarnów is a popular tourist spot, home to many cultural institutions, including the Henryk Sienkiewicz Museum. It’s also close to a significant economic region in Poland, Greater Poland Voivodeship. In English, it’s given the nickname of the “pearl of Polish Renaissance.”

Sports

  • Unia Tarnów – speedway team
  • ZKS Unia Tarnów – association football team
  • Tarnovia Tarnów – association football team
  • Unia Wisła Paged Tarnów – men’s basketball team

Religion

Apart from the Catholics, other Christian denominations such as Baptist Church, Free Brothers Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Methodist Church are also present in Tarnów and offer their services. World War II forced the Jewish population of this city to other places. By the end of WWII, there were very few Jews remaining in this city. During wartime, they were forced away and are now only present as ancient monuments.

Is Tarnow worth visiting?

Tarnów is a cheerful old town with gorgeous ancient architecture. There’s much more to it than just historical buildings, though – plenty of flavor in the eateries and cafes along the cobbled streets, too.

What is Tarnow known for?

Tarnów is renowned for its unique, arched plazas and townhouses, which were influenced by people living in the area before the city even developed – it includes a mixture of traditional Polish architecture, many different cultures, and foreigners who once lived in the region. The Renaissance style of buildings is not only interesting to walk around but is also very sturdy.
