Telsiai Overview

Telšiai is a Lithuanian city with 21,499 inhabitants. It’s the capital of Telšiai County and the Samogitia region and is located on the shores of Lake Mastis. Telšiai is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, most likely dating to before the 14th century.

Names

Telšiai is a variant of the same Lithuanian language root (-telš-, -tilž-) as Tilžė and means “connected to water”. The Telšiai or Telšē in the Samogitian dialect of the Lithuanian language is derived from the verb telkšoti (literally, to be flooded with water, to splash, etc). The name Telšiai has seen many changes throughout history. Telšiai is also called Telsche, Telschi, and in Yiddish טעלז‎ (Telz). Transliterations of the city’s name include Тельшяй, Тельши, and Тяльшяй.

History

Lake Mastis is mentioned in various legends and myths. According to legend, a knight named Džiugas founded the city after he came back home after visiting (and searching for) the Island of Gemstones. Telšiai was first mentioned in writing in the 1450s, but the earliest archeological evidence of settlement in this region goes back to Stone Age times.

Telšiai housed an estate in the 15th century. It was governed by local elders. Telšiai was at the center of one of many uprisings led by a Samogitian peasant.

Telšiai was able to become the center for Samogitia’s culture and politics in the 17th century. Local assemblies known as “sejmiks” were organized and there was a court established too. Telšiai gained Magdeburg rights by the end of that century.

Telšiai was a sanctuary for Polish Lithuanians fighting Russians during the November Uprising. A group of rebel officers set up a revolutionary government and military schools were opened to provide training for officers and NCOs. The city of Telšiai was an early point for the uprising in Samogitia in 1863. Insurrectionist forces gathered there to create a united force throughout the region.

Telšiai has grown steadily over the years, and in 1908 it hosted Lithuania’s first-ever concert event. The town got its fire brigade in 1901, with a pharmacy and theatre opening shortly thereafter.

The city survived two Polish revolutions, was conquered by Germans in World War I, and was occupied by the Red Army for a short time in 1918.

The years of Lithuanian independence, 1918 to 1940 was a golden age for Telšiai – many high schools and seminaries were established there. This has led to young girls and boys receiving a quality education. The Alka Museum was constructed and many cultural societies appeared. In 1935, Telšiai became the center of the country’s administration.

The first Soviet occupation of Telšiai was notable because of the nearby Rainiai massacre, where 76 Lithuanian political prisoners were murdered by the Red Army in June 1941.

Telšiai is the 12th largest Lithuanian city and the center of Telšiai County and Telšiai district municipality. Telšiai is an educational hub with up to 5 schools. The most notable colleges in the area are the Vilnius Academy of Art and the College of Samogitia.

On 22 January 2013, The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania announced that Telšiai would be named the Lithuanian Capital of Culture.

Culture

Samogitian Museum Alka was founded in 1932 by the Society of Ancient Samogitians’ Fans Alka. The museum operated till 1938 when the present-day Alka palace was built for it. There is a Museum located in Samogitia that is particularly famous for collecting 62,000 pieces of art and 70,000 pieces of historical records. They also own 12,000 books and 15,000 film negatives. The museum has a large exposé of Samogitia history and a diverse collection of paintings by famous Lithuanian and foreign artists.

There is a park called the Open-Air Museum of Rural Life of Samogitia in the southern part of the city close to Lake Mastis. It was opened in 1983 and has an exhibition that comprises typical homesteads from 19th-century Samogitia. Currently, there are 16 authentic buildings. The museum exhibition is arranged in homestead sections: a rich farmer’s grange; a barn; a poor farmer’s grange, and a simple peasant’s grange. Visitors to the museum can also learn about a windmill, blacksmith, barn, and other equipment.

Food and cuisine

Telšiai is known for its rich gastronomical traditions (think Samogitia!)

  • Samogitian pancakes

    – Thick, flat pancakes made from a coarse potato puree, with minced meat ground up into it.
  • Kastinys

    – Sour cream “butter” has been on the culinary scene for some time now since it was a popular way of cooking in the US during WW2.
  • Hard cheese

    – Samogitians have been making hard cheese for hundreds of years.

Geography

Telšiai is built on the hilltops of the Samogitian Heights, where it’s surrounded by a beautiful Veronian Lake. Šatrija Hill and Hillfort are nearby, protecting Telšiai from invaders hungry for control of the onion trade.

Climate

In Telsiai, hazy summer days are followed by long, cold winters that see plenty of snow and wind. The temperature in our distribution center rarely varies from 19°F to 71°F, and is seldom below -1°F or above 82°F. The best time to visit Telsiai is when the temperature is between 23-27ºC (73-81ºF) or if you’re looking for a climate that has more than 255 days of sunshine a year.

The largest company in Šiauliai is AB Žemaitijos Pienas, one of Lithuania’s largest milk processing companies.

Telšiai has made conscious efforts to support those who are either starting a new business or who want to create new workplaces. The “Incubator of Business of Telšiai County” has been set up to help promote both of these aspects, including providing advice and assistance.

In September 2012, the average Lithuanian salary increased the most rapidly in Telšiai – up by an eye-opening 7.6 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2012.

Sports

The Lithuanian football team FK Mastis Telšiai plays in the 2 leagues in the western zone. In 2012 they managed to win silver medals and a year later they qualified for the 1 league (following their name change).
