Tienen Overview
Tienen is a city and municipality in the Flemish Brabant region of Flanders, Belgium. As well as Tienen, the city includes Bost, Goetsenhoven, Hakendover, Kumtich, Oorbeek, Oplinter, Sint-Margriete-Houtem, and Vissenaken. A total of 34,365 people lived in Tienen on Jan 1, 2017.
History
An old German family, Thienen, in the early Middle Ages, probably ruled the town.
During the Franco-Spanish War from 1635 to 1659, Tienen was part of the Spanish Netherlands and was captured by a combined Franco-Dutch army in May 1635. Upon its capture, the town was sacked, 200 civilians were killed, and numerous buildings, including Catholic churches and monasteries, were destroyed, resulting in one of the most severe atrocities of the Dutch Revolt. In the Southern Netherlands, the Dutch lost their chances of winning over the majority Catholic population.
The town was incorporated into the Austrian Netherlands after the Treaty of Utrecht in 1714; François Dumouriez used it as a base during Charles. An Aus during the French Revolutionary Wartrian army commanded by Prince Josias of Coburg was defeated by the French on Mar 16, 1793.
The veteran Dumouriez, a hero of Valmy and Jemappes, lost his army within a week, so he defected to the Royalists.

Summers in Tienen is pleasant and partly cloudy, while winters are cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. In typical years, the temperature ranges between 33°F and 74°F and is rarely below 22°F or above 85°F. The best time to visit Tienen for warm-weather activities is from late June to early September.
Economy
The Sugar refinery of Tienen (Tiense Suikerraffinaderij – Raffinerie Tirlemontoise), located at the eastern edge of the town, is Belgium’s center for sugar production. There are facilities owned by Citrique Belge, which produces citric acid, and Havells Sylvania, which manufactures energy-saving lamps.
Culture and significant landmarks
The Suikerrock festival takes place in Tienen every summer.
Initially built in the 12th century, the Sint-Germanus (St. Germain) Church features an altarpiece painted by Gustaaf Wappers in the 19th century. In recognition of its belfry, the complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List of Belfries of Belgium and France.
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poel (Our Lady of the Pool) was built in the 12th century and enlarged in the 15th.
