Timișoara Overview

It is a city in western Romania known for its Secessionist architecture. With its mosaic-patterned roof tiles and icon gallery, the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral dominates the central square, Piața Victoriei. Piața Unirii, a Habsburg-era court, is nearby, as is the Memorial Museum of the 1989 Revolution. In addition to uniforms and documents, the museum also exhibits a film about the dictatorship of Ceauşescu.

With six universities in the city, Timișoara is one of Romania’s most important educational centers. In addition to dental care and cosmetic surgery, Timișoara is Romania’s major medical tourism destination. Timișoara has made several breakthroughs in Romanian medicine, including the first in vitro fertilization, laser heart surgery, and stem cell transplant. The city has one of Romania’s most potent I.T. sectors, alongside Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Brașov. The fastest internet download speed in the world was recorded in Timișoara in 2013.

Etymology

In 1315, Temeswar was first recorded in Hungarian as Temesvár. In this case, it refers to a castle on the Timiş River (Temes). Timiş derives from the Indo-European radical, which means swamp. Hungarian oikonyms (Timişoara and Temeschburg, respectively) are derived from Romanian. During the Habsburg/Austrian era, Temeschwar or Temeswar became commonplace names. The city’s name comes from the river that passes through it, Timișul Mic (Hungarian: Kistemes), a hydronym in use until the 18th century, when it became Bega or Beghei.

Early history

In 4000 BC, the region bounded by the Mureş, the Tisza, and the Danube was fertile and offered favorable conditions for food and livelihood. Despite a mild climate, fertile soil, and abundant water and forests, archeological remains indicate a population of farmers, hunters, and artisans existed there.

The Dacians left traces of their past in Banat as the first identifiable civilization. There is a theory that the current location of Timișoara corresponds to Zurobara, a Dacian settlement. Although its location is unknown, Ptolemy‘s Geographike Hyphegesis places it northwest of Banat.

Middle Ages

In the 9th century, Knyaz Glad ruled these lands and accepted Hungarian sovereignty. Unfortunately, no document from that period has yet been found. As a Roman castrum Temesiensis or castrum premium Theme, Timișoara was first officially mentioned in 1212. However, the first documentary mention of the city is disputed by many historians, who contend that it was donated to Count Parabuch by heir apparent Stephen V of Hungary in 1266. During the reign of Charles I of Hungary, who visited the city in 1307 and ordered the fortress to be strengthened with stone walls and a royal palace to be built, the town was rebuilt and grew considerably. Italian artisans built the palace around a rectangular court containing a dungeon or tower within the main body. Between 1316 and 1323, the royal seat was moved from Buda to Timișoara. In addition to its strategic location, Timișoara grew in importance due to its control over the Banat plain.

Geography

As a mathematical position, Timişoara is situated at the intersection of the 45th parallel north and the 21st meridian east, so it lies in the northern and eastern hemispheres, within the Central European time zone, at almost equal distances from the north pole and the equator. After the meridian, the local time is one h 25′ 8″ ahead of Greenwich Mean Time but 34′ 52″ behind Romania’s official time (Eastern European Time).

Climate

Timişoara enjoys a temperate continental climate, characteristic of the southeastern part of the Pannonian Basin, with some sub-Mediterranean influences. Its Köppen climate classification subtype is Cfb (oceanic climate).

January is the most fantastic month, with an average temperature of −1.7 °C (28.9 °F). On 24 January 1963, Timișoara recorded a low temperature of 35.3 °C (31.5 °F), while the highest recorded temperature was 42 °C (108 °F) in August 2017. Winter days (with maximum temperatures below 0 °C) average 22.4, and frost days (with minimum temperatures below 0 °C) average 91. A tropical day (with a maximum temperature over 30 °C [86 °F]) usually lasts 40 days.

15 Best Things to Do in Timișoara (Romania)

  1. Piaţa Unirii (Union Square)

    – For good reason, since this sweeping rectangular plaza was constructed in the 18th century and is surrounded by sumptuous Baroque and Viennese Secessionist facades. On the east and west borders are Catholic and Serbian Orthodox Cathedrals, built in the 18th century, topped with patterned roofs.
  2. Piaţa Victoriei (Victory Square)

    – A long, pedestrianized square where many of Timișoara’s cultural amenities are situated, Piaţa Victoriei is another sublime public space. On the southern end is the 90-meter Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, and on the northern end, the Romanian Opera House gives the square a sense of spectacle.
  3. Historical Centre

    – Timişoara was once enclosed in a citadel, and its old center is very walkable, with lush parks and the Bega River to the south. In good weather, you can walk to the next cafe or restaurant with outdoor tables and parasols in only a few steps.
  4. Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

    – The neo-Byzantine Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral stands in its park on the south side of Piaţa Victoriei. The monument, begun in 1936 and completed in 1941, holds 5,000 worshippers at once under its nine towers and is the tallest Orthodox building outside Russia and Georgia.
  5. St George’s Cathedral

    – Timișoara’s primary place of worship is an Austrian Baroque monument built between 1736 and 1774. Viennese architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, the son of famous Baroque star Johann Bernhard, drew the first plans.
  6. Roses Park

    – Timișoara is known as the City of Flowers for parks like this one in the gardens beside the Bega River. During the Universal Exposition in 1891, Emperor Franz Joseph I visited Roses Park.
  7. Muzeul de Artă (Art Museum)

    – Located in the magnificent Baroque palace at no. 1 Piaţa Unirii, Timișoara’s art museum is known for its 90 paintings by Corneliu Baba, a 20th-century portraitist, and illustrator. Aside from self-portraits, you can find landscapes from Spain and Venice and portraits of prominent cultural figures such as George Enescu.
  8. Casa Brück

    – Built in 1910 by Hungarian architect László Székely, the house is a beautiful example of Secessionist and Art Nouveau architecture on Piaţa Unirii. Despite its modern signage, the pharmacy on the ground floor has been here since the building was built.
  9. Muzeul Revoluției

    – The 1989 Revolution is commemorated in a memorial exhibition north of the Old Town. Although it feels a little improvised, the show is a compelling account of a pivotal moment in Romanian history.
  10. Museum of the Communist Consumer

    – This free private museum resembles a home filled with consumer items from the communist era up until 1989. The attraction has been designed by a team of artists from Timișoara, and you’re invited to pick your way through three large rooms filled with household electronics, school paraphernalia, toys, postcards, tools, cleaning products, bicycles, sports equipment, crockery, cooking utensils, musical instruments, newspapers, posters, and much more.
  11. Museum of Banat

    – A great place to get a sense of place, this museum is headquartered at the Gothic Revival Castelul Huniade. Seven years after being destroyed in the Siege of Timișoara in 1849, it was rebuilt as the oldest building in the city.
  12. Theresia Bastion

    – During the 18th century, Timișoara was fortified by three rings of star-shaped walls, nine bastions, and water-filled ditches. Today, the Theresia Bastion features shops, bars, restaurants, and clubs within its arches and two branches of the Museum of Banat.
  13. Romanian Opera House

    – A princely opera house in Timișoara is among more than 200 in Central and Eastern Europe built in the 19th century by the Viennese partnership Fellner & Helmer.
  14. Serbian Orthodox Bishop’s Palace

    – Built at the same time as the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in the 1740s, the episcopal palace stands on its shoulder. A museum inside houses liturgical objects, portraits of Timișoara’s bishops, and icons. Bas-reliefs adorn the window pediments, the roof, and the portal.
  15. Botanic Park

    – Near the Old Town, near the site of the old citadel walls, is a 10-hectare botanical garden founded in the mid-1980s. A beautiful ornamental garden and paths and elevation differences separate these different areas.
