Tomaszów Mazowiecki Overview
In December 2021, Tczew had 59,111 residents. It is located on the Vistula River in Eastern Pomerania, Kociewie, northern Poland. As part of the Invasion of Poland, the Vistula Bridge, or Bridge of Tczew, played an essential role in the city’s Old Town.
The Pomeranian Voivodeship is the capital of Tczew County and the largest town of the Kociewie ethnocultural region.
Every year, the American-Polish Partnership for Tczew organizes an English Language Camp in the city.
Geographical location
On the west bank of the Vistula River, Tczew is approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Gdańsk Bay at the Baltic Sea and 35 kilometers (22 miles) south-east of Gdańsk.
History
Tczew (Trsow, Dersowe, ‘weaver’s town’) appeared first as Trsow in a document by Pomeranian Duke Grzymisław bestowing the land to the Knights Hospitaller in 1198. It was here that Sambor I, Duke of Pomerania, built a fortress around 1200. Derszewo is derived from the name of a feudal lord named Dersaw, which appears in some documents. Trsow and Derszewo may have referred to the same settlement or two neighboring ones. Pomeranian Duke Sambor II moved his residence from Lubiszewo Tczewskie to Tczew so that he could better control traffic on the Vistula. In 1252, Tczew and Dirschau were the names of the settlement.
A city council was created in 1258, and town rights were granted to Tczew in 1260. It is the only case in Poland where a city council must be established before city rights can be given. Crafts and trade developed, there was a port on the Vistula, and there was a mint. The Dominican Order was brought to the city by Duke Mestwin II in 1289. Until 1308, it belonged to Poland. Heinrich von Plötzke of the Teutonic Knights purchased Tczew from Brandenburg following the Treaty of Soldin in 1309, despite Brandenburg’s initial claim to the region being dubious. Teutonic Knights expelled the townspeople, and the town’s organization ceased to exist for more than half a century. As a result of Winrich von Kniprode’s Kulm law, it was rebuilt between 1364 and 1384. As a result of the Polish victory in the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the town was briefly recaptured by the Polish army. As a result of the Hussite attacks in 1434, the city was burned to the ground. As a result of its opposition to the Teutonic Order rule, the town joined the Prussian Confederation in 1440. As an alternative to indemnities, Bohemian mercenaries on the Order’s service sold Tczew to Poland in 1457. The reincorporation of Tczew into Poland was confirmed by the Second Peace of Thorn (1466). The town became the county seat of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in the newly created Polish province of Royal Prussia, which later became part of Greater Poland.

In honor of Duke Sambor II, who granted municipal rights to Tczew in 1260, the town’s coat of arms depicts a red griffin.
