Located within the Metropolitan City of Naples, Torre del Greco has a population of approximately 85,762 (2017).
History
Ancient Greeks initially colonized the area as part of Magna Graecia. There are many patrician villas along the coast of Torre del Greco, just as at Oplontis and Stabiae, which were also suburbs of Herculaneum during Roman times. As a result of Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 A.D., volcanic ash buried the area.
In the nearby Roman Villa Sora, with its 150m-long frontage overlooking the sea, a large and sumptuous residence was built in the first century B.C., the remains of which can still be seen today. On the beach below are the remains of a Roman bath complex (Terme Ginnasi), and quays would have existed along the shore like the Villa of the Papyri. According to the piles of lime in some rooms, precious unfinished opus sectile floors made of imported marble, and a famous graffito which records the cost of the work, the building was embellished in the early imperial period was renovated in 79 A.D. after the 62 A.D. earthquake.
In the Bourbon excavations of the 1700s, many exquisite statues and frescoes were discovered here, many of which are now in museums in Naples and Palermo. According to the area inspector during the excavations of 1989, the spectacular frescoes were similar to those of the Neronian Domus Aurea than to those of Pompeiian houses due to their size and quality.
A group of archaeologists from the GAV Archaeological Group rediscovered it in 1974. During the 1989–92 excavations, other areas east and west of the apsidal hall were exposed, including service corridors, reception rooms, finely decorated bedrooms, and the remains we see today. Following the eruption, a collapsed top floor was found, while the bottom floor was buried under ash. You can visit the middle floor of the building today.
A village called Sora and a village called Calastro were established later in the area. As part of Belisarius’ plan to move the Byzantine population to Naples in 535, they were forced to Naples. Turris Octava, the Latin name for The Tower of Eight or The Eighth Tower, was also used around 700. It was given its present name for the first time in 1015, when a Greek hermit took up residence in the tower or when a Greek vine was cultivated here.

Temperatures range from 44°F to 88°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 37°F or rising above 93°F.
