Trbovlje Overview
Trbovlje is the tenth-largest city in Slovenia and the administrative center of the Municipality of Trbovlje. Located in central-eastern Slovenia, it lies in the valley of a minor left-bank tributary of the Sava River.
Name
Trefeul was attested in written sources in 1220–30, as well as Trevůl and Trevor in 1265–67, Triuella in 1302, Trifeul in 1325, Triueal in 1330, and Triuel in 1424). In standard Slovene, the name is a feminine plural noun, but in the local dialect, it is an adjective. According to this, the term refers to a former area resident known as Trobo. Historically, the German name for this city was Trail.
History
The Beech Mountain coal mine was established in 1804 (Slovene: Bukova Gora, 547 meters tall). The Austrian Southern Railway connected the town to the wider world in 1849, resulting in further development. Trbovlje developed a cement plant, a mechanical separator, a sawmill, and a power plant during the 19th century.
Several mine strikes led to communist agitation and the development of the leftist movement in Trbovlje. There were several fatalities on both sides of a clash between workers and members of the Organization of Yugoslav Nationalists on June 1, 1924. There was a sit-down strike in 1934 by the miners.
Trbovlje was annexed to the Third Reich along with Lower Styria during the Second World War. Initially, the German authorities were delighted with Trbovlje’s coal mines and other industries, which led to a reduction in unemployment and an increase in wages. In August 1941, however, Slovenes were arrested and exiled, resulting in disaffection. By the summer of 1944, 90% of the population opposed the Germans because of this and other repressive measures.

Climate
Trbovlje has a pleasant summer climate, a freezing and snowy winter climate, and partly cloudy skies most of the year. Year-round, the temperature ranges between 23°F and 78°F, rarely falling below 11°F or rising above 87°F. Late June to late August is the best time to visit Trbovlje for warm-weather activities.
Culture
There is a large section dedicated to mining history at the Trbovlje Museum (Slovene: Zasavski Muzej Trbovlje). Trbovlje is also the birthplace of the Slovenian industrial band Laibach.
Students in Trbovlje can participate in a wide range of events organized by the Trbovlje Student Club (Slovene: Klub trboveljskih tudentov).
Economy
Trbovlje has a long history of coal mining. With a 360-meter chimney, Trbovlje Power Station is also known as Europe’s tallest chimney.
