Treviso Overview

The city of Treviso is located in northeastern Italy and has many canals. The Palazzo dei Trecento dominates the central Piazza dei Signori with battlements and vaulted arcades. The Fontana delle Tette was a fountain that dispensed wine in the 16th century. A Titian painting is located near the neoclassical facade of the Duomo, which features a Romanesque crypt and a neoclassical facade. Medieval frescoes are on the Civic Museums’ leading site, the St. Catherine complex.

History

It is believed that Treviso derived its name from the Celtic word “Tarvos,” combined with the Latin ending “ism,” thus forming “Tarvisium.” According to Celtic mythology, Tarvos means bull, but in Eastern astrology, the word is associated with the lion, Leo. Some believe it comes from the language of a tribe that first settled in Treviso.

In 89 B.C., when the Romans added Cisalpine Gaul to their dominions, Tarvisium became a municipium. A Roman tribe called Claudia ascribed citizenship to these citizens. Aquileia and Opitergium, two major cities of Roman Venetia during ancient and early medieval times, were connected by the Via Postumia. Although Pliny writes that the Silis, or Sile River, flows ex montibus Tarvisanis, Treviso is rarely mentioned in ancient writing.

Treviso became a Christian city during the Roman period. The Catholic faith was introduced to Treviso and the surrounding areas by St. Prosdocimus, a Greek bishop ordained by St. Peter. A resident bishop was deemed necessary by the 4th century due to the growth of the Christian population. Bishop John the Pious began his episcopacy in 396 AD, the first documented bishop.

After the fall of the Western Empire, Treviso experienced a demographic and economic decline; however, Attila the Hun spared it, and it remained an important center during the 6th century. Tradition has it that Totila, the leader of the Ostrogoths during the Gothic Wars, was born in Treviso. The Lombards established an important mint and made Treviso one of 36 ducal seats after the Gothic Wars when it fell under the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. As the Frankish Empire annexed northern Italy, the latter continued to produce coins during the reign of the last Lombard king, Desiderius. It was also from the city where Venice was founded.

Geography

Treviso is located at the confluence of the Botteniga and Sile rivers, 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Venice, 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Vicenza, 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Padua, and 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Cortina d’Ampezzo. On the plain between the Gulf of Venice and the Alps, the city lies about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the Piave River.

Climate

Treviso has mild differences between highs and lows and adequate yearly rainfall. This climate is classified as a Cfa (temperate humid subtropical climate).

Population

83,950 (2017)

Cuisine

The most typical appetizer is soppressa, a thick slice of cured meat served with polenta and radicchio. As for the first courses, the “risi” (either with liver or accompanied by seasonal vegetables such as asparagus, radicchio, peas or “bisi”…) is notable, as are the soups (particularly the simple capon broth with tortellini, the bean soup, and the soup coada). Feathered game and poultry dominate the main course: roasted guinea fowl with pevarada (a sauce made with liver and anchovy paste), boiled chicken, goose (often seasoned with celery), spit-roasted duck, and capon stew.

Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Treviso

Piazza dei Signori

Treviso’s charming Piazza dei Signori is surrounded by the Palazzo dei Trecento, once the seat of the city’s government, and the Palazzo del Podestà, a 15th-century palace with a tall tower.

Cathedral and Museo Diocesano

Built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, the five-domed cathedral of San Pietro dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Located beneath it is the crypt of the original church, which dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, and the porch, which was built in 1836.

City Walls and Gates

Treviso was a Roman city, and the Romans fortified it from the beginning—the walls surrounding it date from the 15th century. Treviso was protected against attack by the River Sile, which flows alongside the walls.

Civic Museums: Luigi Bailo and Santa Caterina

The Treviso Civic Museum’s collections are now arranged in two separate complexes after the restoration of the building on Borgo Cavour. Arturo Martini, one of the most important 20th-century sculptors in Europe, is represented by the Luigi Bailo Civic Museum. It is one of the most important collections of his works in Europe.

San Nicolò

Built in brick during the 13th and 14th centuries, the Dominican church is located southwest of the old town. Restoration has been done to its vaulted timber roof and round piers.

Canals and Water Mills

Besides the confluence of two rivers, Treviso is surrounded by a network of canals and waterways that meander picturesquely through the city.

Villa Emo

As well as being one of the largest villas built by the great architect Andrea Palladio, Villa Emo was a symbolic statement of social change during the 16th century. From the family’s life to work done by farm laborers, it incorporated all the business of the tremendous agricultural estate (the family made its fortune growing corn for polenta) under one roof.

Bike or Walk along the Sile River

The Sile River Natural Regional Park is one of the most popular things to do in Treviso, both for tourists and locals. Over 10,000 acres of meadows, wetlands, and rivers are protected in the park.

Pescheria (Fish Market)

This is one of Treviso’s oldest and least changed quarters, home to the colonnaded Buranelli buildings and Camaldolese nuns’ convent. Burano fishermen used to sell their fish from its midst until the mid-1800s when three small islands were added.

San Francesco

This church’s mix of Romanesque and Gothic features dates from the 13th century when Gothic replaced the older and heavier Romanesque style. Due to this, its transepts and entrances are rounded, while its windows and chapels have sleeker arches.
