Trnava was founded at a crossroads near the river Trnávka that had been used as a trade route since prehistoric times. It is mentioned in writing as early as 1211. The Archbishop of Ostrihom makes a donation from the income of the local church to the Ostrihom chapter.

Today Slovakia’s city of Trnava was granted the privilege of being a free royal city for the first time. Due to these privileges, Belo IV subordinated the town directly to the crown and defined rights that allowed it to develop rapidly. A center of agriculture gradually evolved into a center of production, trade, and crafts.

In the 13th century, the city built an extensive fortification covering almost 60 hectares. In the past, fortifications consisted of brick towers connected by earthen ramparts, which later evolved into brick walls.

Other Hungarian kings further strengthened the privileged position of the city. Trnava’s importance was also demonstrated by the fact that it was the meeting place for kings.

On 4/28/1430, the Hussite army defeated the Hungarian army at Trnava.

In 1543, before the Turkish threat, Trnava gained prominence when the Ostrihom chapter and archbishopric moved here. Bratislava became the country’s administrative center, while Trnava became the cultural and religious center. A Jesuit college was founded in Trnava on August 18, 1561.
