Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state is home to the traditional university city of Tübingen. Developed on both sides of the Neckar and Ammer rivers, it is located 30 km (19 mi) south of Stuttgart. Approximately one in three of the 90,000 residents of Tübingen are students. Tübingen’s Eberhard Karls University has 27,665 students enrolled for the 2018/2019 winter semester. Its status as a university city contributes to its low median age in Germany. The average citizen of Tübingen is 39.1 years old as of December 31, 2015. Veganism and environmental awareness are popular in the city.
Originally called Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern before 1973, Tübingen is the capital of an eponymous district and administrative region (Regierungsbezirk).
The Neckar-Alb region is centered around Tübingen and Reutlingen (about 15 km (9.3 mi) east).
Although it borders Stuttgart to the north and west (Böblingen district), it is not administratively part of the Stuttgart Region. In a broader regional and cultural context, however, the city and northern parts of its district may be considered part of that region.
Ancient humans probably settled the area around the 12th millennium B.C, and Rome built a lime frontier wall along the Neckar River in A.D. 85, leaving some traces here. Alamanni people inhabited the region in the sixth or seventh centuries when Tübingen was founded. Although there is no evidence to support this, some historians argue that the Battle of Solicinium occurred on Spitzberg, a mountain in Tübingen, in AD 367.
The first official mention of Tübingen dates back to 1191. Records of Hohentübingen’s castle date back to 1078, when Henry IV, king of Germany, besieged it. Medieval Latin transcribed its name as Tuingia or Twingia.
After 1146, Count Hugo V (1125-52) was promoted to count Palatine as Hugo I, and Tübingen became the capital of the County Palatine of Tübingen. As of 1231, Tübingen had become a civitas, which signified that the Crown recognized civil liberties and a judicial system.
The Augustinian monastery in Tübingen was founded in 1262 by Pope Alexander IV; the Franciscan monastery was founded in 1272. A Latin school (today’s Uhland-Gymnasium) was founded in 1300. In 1535, Duke Ulrich of Württemberg disestablished the Franciscan monastery during the Protestant Reformation.
Ulrich III, Count of Württemberg, purchased the county palatine in 1342 and incorporated it into the County of Württemberg.
St. George’s Collegiate Church was constructed between 1470 and 1483. The collegiate church offices provided the opportunity for what soon became the most significant event in Tübingen’s history: Duke Eberhard im Bart of Württemberg established the Eberhard Karls University in 1477, which is one of the oldest universities in Central Europe. In 1535, a Protestant faculty, Tübinger Stift, was established in the former Augustinian monastery, and it soon became one of the most influential learning centers in the Holy Roman Empire. Over 26,000 students attend the university, one of the biggest in Germany and the largest source of income for the city’s residents.
In addition to its arts culture, Tübingen has an active nightlife scene. Besides the full roster of official and unofficial university events, including presentations by the university’s official poet in residence and parties hosted by student associations, the city is also home to several choirs, theatre companies, and nightclubs. In addition, Tübingen’s Kunsthalle (art exhibition hall), on the “Wanne,” hosts two or three international exhibits annually.
There is only one professional sports team in Tübingen, the Tigers Tübingen.
Founded in 1477, the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s oldest universities. It is also the city’s largest employer, including the university hospitals. The town also has several research institutes, including the Max Planck Institutes for Biological Cybernetics, Developmental Biology, Intelligent Systems, Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the MPG and Max Planck Institute for Biology, Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, Werner Reichardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience, among others. Science, industrial companies, and start-ups are collaborating on biotechnology and artificial intelligence research in a modern technology park in the northern part of the city. Botanischer Garten der Universität Tübingen is another excellent feature of the university. Additionally, the Protestant College of Church Music exists.
The number of children and young adults attending school in Tübingen exceeds 10,000. The city has 30 schools, some offering more than one type of education. A total of 17 of them are primary schools, and the rest are secondary schools: four of the lowest rank, Hauptschule, three of the middle rank, Realschule, and six are Gymnasien (grammar schools). There are also three special needs and four vocational schools (Berufsschulen).
Tübingen has comfortable summers, freezing winters, and partly cloudy skies throughout the year.
Temperatures usually range from 28°F to 76°F throughout the year and rarely fall below 16°F or rise above 87°F. Late June to early September is the best time of year to visit Tübingen for warm-weather activities.
One of the most prominent features of this scenery is the yellow Hölderlinturm (Hölderlin’s tower), where Friedrich Hölderlin lived until he died in 1843. There is no doubt that Tübingen is the city of poets and thinkers when it comes to German writers.
For so many reasons, it is a place everyone can appreciate. Tübingen’s enchanting setting is one of the first things you notice when you arrive. Forests and vineyards surround the old city, built on a hillside that slopes to the Neckar River.
