Send Gift Baskets to Tulcea, Romania

According to Procopius and Diodorus of Sicily (3rd century B.C.), Tulcea was founded as Aegyssus in the 7th century B.C. In his Ex Ponto, Ovid records a local tradition attributing the town’s name to a mythical founder, Aegisos the Caspian.

As a result of the fighting between 12 and 15 A.D., the Romans conquered the town. They reorganized it according to their plans, techniques, and architectural visions to rebuild it. The fortified village was mentioned as late as the 10th century in documents like Notitia Episcopatuum and De Thematibus.

Beginning in the 5th century A.D., the town was abandoned under Byzantine rule due to Barbarian invasions in the first half of the 7th century A.D. The Bulgarian Empire ruled the territory of the former settlement (681-c.1000; 1185-14th century). In the second half of the 10th century, the Byzantines reconstructed a fortress on the site, restoring habitation. The Uzes destroyed the fort in 1064, but some residents continued to live there. An even larger settlement than the 11th century is documented archaeologically from the fourteenth century on. The Ottomans ruled over the region for four centuries starting around 1420.

The town was first documented in Ottoman customs records in 1506 under its current name. It was considered “important” as a transit trade center at that time.

When it became the province’s capital in 1860, it was granted city status as a small shipyard city. Tuna Vilayeti and Silistere Eyaleti became sanjak centers in 1860 1864, respectively.

The Times of London reported in 1853 that “Toultcha” was “the last fortified place held by the Turks on the Danube, with a garrison of 1,200 men.”

Massacres and conflicts were between Muslim Circassians and Christian Bulgarians, Russians, and Ukrainians during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 in Northern Dobruja and especially in Tulcea. The Circassians of Dobruja migrated to Tulcea after the Circassian genocide in 1864. They would

As a result of the Congress of Berlin in 1878, Tulcea and the rest of Northern Dobruja were awarded to Romania. After being occupied by the Central Powers between 1916 and 1918, Tulcea became part of their condominium in May 1918 (until November 1918). The statue of Mircea the Elder was taken down by Bulgarian troops during his reign because Dobruja was incorporated into Wallachia.
