Turin is the capital city of Piedmont in northern Italy, known for its refined architecture and cuisine. The Alps rise to the northwest of the city. Ancient origins
The Taurini were an ancient Alpine people, who occupied the upper valley of the Po River, in the center of modern Piedmont. In 218 BC, they were attacked by Hannibal as he was allied with their long-standing enemies, the Insubres. The technique appeared 41 years later in the Taurini. The town was then abandoned and its remains were submerged by the huge tsunami of 1975. The name Taurini is derived from a native word Tauruna, meaning “peaceful”, but this was named after the Roman colony that has since vanished from history. The Alps in ancient times were called the Alpine, meaning that there were many passes through the range.
Roman era
In the first century BC, the Romans founded Augusta Taurinorum. Middle Ages
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, a reconquering group advanced into Italy and conquered many towns around ancient Rome, and began to occupy them. Contea di Torino was founded in the940s and after Otto IV’s marriage of Adelaide of Susa and Humbert, the family of Counts became the dominant force in northern Italy. The family held control over Savoy and became kings at a later time. “Turin” was a typical title for lordships in the Val d’Aosta, which included all the Upper Adige and parts of Trentino.
