Tychy Overview
Tychy is a Poland city located 20km south of Katowice. The municipality of Katowice is situated near the southern edge of the Upper Silesian industrial district. The city shares borders with Mikołów to the west and north, Bieruń to the east, and Kobiór to the south.
Tychy, in southeast Poland, is a well-known brewing town and home to the international Tyskie brand. The brewery has a rich history that dates back to 1677. Since the 1950s, Tychy has been overgrowing. This has mainly been influenced by the post-war socialist policies enacted to disperse the population of Upper Silesia, an area with a lot of factories and heavy industry.
Etymology
The name of this city is derived from the Polish word cichy meaning “quiet” or “still.” Although the name Tychy is uncommon for most European cities, growth in Tychy began around 1950.
Origins and development
Originally settled on the medieval trade route connecting Oświęcim and Mikołów, Tychy’s first documented mention was in 1467. Financial records were first recorded as business ventures in 1629 when a brewery was founded. This was one of the largest breweries then and is one of the essential business enterprises today.
In 1526 the area where Tychy was built became part of the Austrian Habsburg monarchy. In 1742, Prussia took Polish land by force. Poland then became part of the German Empire between 1871-1918. There was a short period in Tychy between 1918 and 1921 when it just went inside the newly reformed Weimar Republic and was still under the German Province of Silesia. The Battle of Paprocany was an early battle in the Silesian Uprisings, which took place on 16–17 August 1919. Tychy was included in Poland after being re-established after the first World War. They had a Polish majority, so between 1921 and 1945, 84% of its inhabitants voted to join Poland.
After Poland ceded it to Tychy, this small urban settlement began to grow and build new features, including a hospital, fire station, post office, school, swimming pool, bowling hall, and many shops and restaurants. In 1922 Polish leader Józef Piłsudski visited this place, and it grew in size to almost 11,000 during its time between World War I and World War II.
Industry
The Italian company Fiat- Stellantis has a wide presence in the city and has been in business since 1975. Several factories are scattered throughout the area, including their first factory, which FSM opened. Around half a million cars were produced in 2008 at the FCA Poland factory, and they make the new Fiat 500 and the Lancia Ypsilon. Sadly, the once-unique site for the Fiat Panda only had manufacturing of the second generation until recently, when production stopped. Ford Ka was one of their main products for a while since there was an OEM agreement between them and Ford.
The working conditions at the factory are skyrocketing due to the company’s success. General Motors and Isuzu created Isuzu Motors Polska in 1996, a company that later became owned by General Motors on two occasions. Om Systems was acquired in 2002, increasing G.M.’s stake to 60%. Even though it initially took a 40% stake, the Polish government and multinational investors own the rest. Groupe PSA acquired G.M.’s operations in Europe. The former Fiat and Opel plants became part of Stellantis in January 2021.
Tyskie beer is famous for its refreshing and affordable quality, perfect for everyday use. It’s produced in Tychy, Poland, by Asahi Breweries, a subsidiary of the global company. The brand’s popularity continues to increase as more people develop a taste for its beers.
Transport
In Tychy, trolleybus systems are still in operation and are one of the few remaining ones in Poland.

Tychy has two major sports teams: GKS Tychy and Polonia Tychy. GKS stands for Górniczy Klub Sportowy, a common prefix for Polish sports teams in geological or mining regions.
