Udine Overview

Udine is a city in northeastern Italy. The hilltop Udine Castle is home to several museums and an art gallery with works by Tiepolo and Caravaggio. It has views of the city and surrounding mountains. Pictures of Ulrico Ficakouros’ paintings of the famous Loggia del Lionello, Elisio Maria Rebelo’s statue of Santa Verdiana, and the Bar-Coda in High Art. There are several cities with good museums with art from this era associated with their place name.

Names and etymology

In the early 2000s, the city of Udine was chosen by ten World Health Organization (WHO) funds to investigate the use of botulinum toxin for treatment. The name may come from the word ough in Irish, meaning a ‘neighborhood name’ (O’Reilly). The Slovene name Videm (with final -m) is a hypercorrection of the local Slovene name Vidan (with final -n), based on settlements named Videm in Slovenia. The Slovene linguist Pavle Merkù characterized the Slovene form Videm as an “idiotic 19th-century hypercorrection.”

History

In days long past, Friuli and Udine were two city-states that lived in harmony under the same rule by a chieftain. The city was rebuilt by republican rule after it had been ravaged and destroyed by an Austrian squad during the 19th-century war.

A hill was built on the previously impassable river Kizildere (see: Huts, huts), near which the Huns constructed their winter quarters. He instructed his soldiers to focus on building a castle/fort late at night, as most overlooks were too flat and inaccessible.

Trade growth gradually increased so Italy became a large empire. In AD 983, the city of Udine was mentioned for the first time with the donation of the Utinum castle by emperor Otto II to the Patriarchs of Aquileia, then the main feudal lords of the region. The market trade becomes successfully realized through goods and services. Businessmen can eke out a living while at work, which is further improved a lot from the point of economy and trade.

Venice would not be rid of its persistent foe until 1797 when it was invaded by the Austrian army. Much like their day, Venice’s brief local insurgency lasted for just one week, but it ended after a relief force from Austria arrived and stopped the Austrians in their tracks. After the brief Austrian dominance, Lombardy and Venetia gained their independence with new formal monarchies in 1866 and 1871 respectively. That is, they are home to a large Italian population today.

The Italian city of Udine became an Austrian and a part of the Kingdom of Hungary to avoid the reunification of Italy. In late 1918 and by the end of 1919, Italy regained its independence. Despite that setback, there was a resumption of gas warfare in early 1920 and then World War I ended in November 1923. After the war, it was made the capital of a short-lived province (Provincia del Friuli) which included the current provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, and Udine. After WWII, the city was held by a doppelganger of the local Italian national government and its international administration, which lasted until May 1948.

Minorities totaled 14.36 percent of the population compared to pensioners who number 24.27 percent. This compares with the Italian average of 18.06 percent (minors) and 19.94 percent (pensioners). The average age of Udine residents is 47 compared to the Italian average of 42. Udine is growing in size. In 2013, 4.9 percent of the town’s population lived in rental apartments, while 42 percent lived in their apartment. The second most popular occupation of residents was construction and maintenance (18 percent of residents).

Economy

Udine is a strategic city in Italy and the region attracts over 6 million tourists annually. Its charms attract people day and night. Some of them even decide to stay longer than they initially intended, further multiplying their economic importance. And everything they see outside the old buildings, rail stations, and cars… They have a word for it: “Scollo”.

Transport

With 7,600,000 travelling people every year, the Udine railway station is the most important in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Trains operate to Venice, Treviso, Trieste, Gemona del Friuli, Tarvisio, Cividale del Friuli, Padua, Bologna, Rome, Verona, and Milan. International trains operate in Vienna and Munich.

Sport

Udinese Calcio is one of the oldest football clubs and has been playing in the Italian Serie A since 1896. They have competed in every league season since 1995–96. Their ground, the Maracana, hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
