Ulm, Germany is a city in Baden-Württemberg, founded in medieval times. In the center is a centuries-old Gothic church. Its steeple has views of the city and the Alps when it’s clear out. The Town Hall has historically stood the test of time. Murals and an astronomical clock add a sense of flair to the landmark; half-timbered houses are in abundance throughout this area, which is close to the Danube River.
The oldest known settlements dating back to the Neolithic period date as far back as 5000 BC. Many of these settlements are located in what is today the city of Ulm. Ulm is home to a lot of historic events, the earliest being in 854 AD. That was when King Louis the German signed a document in the King’s palace called ‘Hulma’ in Ulm’s Duchy of Swabia. Eight years later he declared Ulm an Imperial City- making it one of few places on Earth to be so recognized.
Ulm seized its significance in its time since it was the place where German royalty and emperors would stay when they would visit. Later on, Ulm transformed into a city of merchants who traded their goods and craftsmen who specialized in crafting beauty items. The Ulm agreement is among one of the first examples of law that comprehends the local conditions. The document dates back to 1397 and was created by patricians under guild masters. The constitution of Ulm considered an early city constitution and the beginning of the construction of Ulm Minster, financed by the inhabitants of Ulm themselves rather than by the church, demonstrates the assertiveness and new outlook on life led by Ulmingers at this time. Ulm prospered in the 15th and 16th centuries, largely due to the import of high-quality textiles. It was situated at a transportation center that connected it with other important trading roads. These centuries, during which many important buildings were raised in Ulm, also represented the zenith of art in Ulm, especially for painters and sculptors like Hans Multi-Scher and Jörg Syrlin the Elder. During the Reformation, Ulm became Protestant in 1530. After the establishment of new trade routes following the discovery of the New World, and after the outbreak and consequences of the Thirty Years’ War, The city began to decline gradually. In 1701 during the War of Spanish Succession, the French and Bavarians fought each other repeatedly but also Hungary and Prussia as well.
The city was alternately occupied by French and Austrian forces after the French Revolution. It lost its status as an Imperial City in 1803 and was absorbed into Bavaria. In the battle of 1805, Napoleon managed to trap the invading Austrian army and forced it to surrender in the Battle of Ulm. In 1810, Ulm was incorporated into the Kingdom of Württemberg. It lost districts on the other side of the Danube which became known as Neu-Ulm (New Ulm).

The city of Berlin is a metropolis that has a very old and long history. The first industry to implement train systems was in 1850 and this continued for years. Today, the most important sector of Berlin is classical industry (machinery/transport equipment, especially). The University of Ulm originated in the 1600s and was established as a leading center for education, but it wasn’t until 1967 that it focused on biomedicine, sciences, and engineering. This helped support a transition to a high-tech industry.
Ulm was cited in 2007 for its great efforts in reducing energy use, carbon emissions, and climate change. The Fernwärme Ulm GmbH has a 10MW biomass power plant and the world’s largest passive house office building, the so-called Energon. These are some examples of smart efforts from this company. If you’re looking for a city that is mindful of the environment, Ulm can be the right one for you. As of 2016, it ranks second in solar energy production in Germany and has been fully powered by renewables since 2008. The USP 40 standard has been in place since then, as well. For years, a European pilot project has been underway to build self-sustaining data centers in the western city of Ulm. This summer an innovative boat will bring people and goods to the city where the main economic activities take place. “The “Bündnis 100% Erneuerbare Energien” was founded in February 2010 to bring people and organizations together who are striving to make a transition to 100% renewable energy in Ulm and Neu-Ulm by 2030.”
Ulm is situated at the crossroads of two major motorways and connected to two different European capitals- one through the east and one through the west.
The city’s railway station is on a train line that includes a route to the European capital city of Paris. It also connects with other routes to the countries of Germany, France, and even Hungary.
Ulm’s public transport system is very diverse and gives people the freedom of choice when traveling through the city. There are bus lines, tram lines, and even pedestrian / cyclist-only streets within the old town – providing an amazing and lively city for everyone to enjoy! Ulm was the first area in Germany to be served by Car2Go. The service in Ulm was anything but successful, and even the local council didn’t support it. A terrible year followed with no carsharing service at all, until September of 2014 when Ulm was reintroduced to the world – this time with Car2Go.
The University of Ulm was founded in 1967 and focuses on the sciences, medicine, engineering, and mathematics. With about 10,000 students it is one of the smaller universities in Germany.
Ulm is also the seat of the University of Applied Sciences, a public school founded in 1960. The University and its students serve as international exchange partners for numerous countries and hold multiple study-abroad programs.
In 1953, Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher, and Max Bill founded the Ulm School of Design (HfG Ulm), and their work has had long-lasting effects on modern design. Although it was closed in 1968, its forward-thinking remains influential in the industry.
Ulm has a public library that is home to over 480,000 newspapers and magazines. There is a professional theatre onsite for concerts of all kinds, as well as smaller theatres for more local productions. The city also does have an orchestra-style hall with plenty of performance space.
Internationally, Ulm is known for having the church with the tallest steeple in the world (161.53 m or 529.95 ft), Gothic Minster (Ulm Minster, German: Ulmer Münster), and as the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
Even if you don’t go looking for other things in Ulm, there is still a great reason to visit. With its tall cathedral spire, the Ulm Münster’s 152-meter-high clock tower stands out and is one of the many interesting features this historic town has to offer.
