Valladolid Overview
The city of Valladolid is located in northwest Spain. On San Pablo Plaza, the Spanish Gothic San Pablo Church dates back to the 1400s and is one of the city’s most famous medieval religious sites. Nearby is the Royal Palace, where Spanish kings lived in the early 1600s. Located in a Gothic building, the National Sculpture Museum houses sculptures from all over the world. Christopher Columbus Museum chronicles the life of the Italian explorer, who died in 1506 in Valladolid.
Etymology
According to some etymological theories, the modern name Valladolid refers to the confluence of rivers in the valley and comes from the Celtiberian language expression Vallis Tolitum.
Location
Valladolid is located at about 735 meters above sea level in the Meseta Norte, the plateau drained by the Duero river basin, which covers much of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. On the left bank of the Pisuerga, near the confluence of the Esgueva and Pisuerga, the primitive urban core was built ex novo in the 11th century. A major right-bank tributary to the Douro, the Pisuerga flows through Valladolid on both banks.
Climate
Valladolid has a continentalized hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa) with influences from a cold semi-arid climate (BSk). As a result of Valladolid’s altitude and inland location, the city experiences cool and windy winters. Winters are characterized by fog in the mornings, snow occurs occasionally, and temperatures drop below freezing during cold fronts. Due to its distance from the sea and higher altitude, Valladolid’s climate is influenced by its height.
History
The Vaccaei were the first people documented in the middle Valley of the Duero as a stable presence.
It has been discovered that Celtiberian and Roman ruins have been excavated nearby. In the area of the current San Miguel and Rosarillo square, the nucleus of the city was initially enclosed by a palisade. The existence of three ancient wall lines has been proven.
During Muslim rule in Spain, the Christian kings moved their population north into more easily defended areas and created a no-man’s land as a buffer against further Moorish conquests. Around the 10th century, the Moors captured the area.
Alfonso VI of León and Castile gifted the Lordship of Valladolid to Count Pedro Ansrez in 1072. Afflicted with the responsibility of repopulating the area, Ansrez, and his wife, Eylo Alfónsez, founded Valladolid. In 1084, plans were already underway for the settlement’s foundation. He built the La Antigua church and a palace (now lost). In addition to the Churches of San Nicolás and Sebastián, Eylo founded three hospitals. Both of them founded the church of Santa Maria. People from the lands of Carrión and Saldaña repopulated Valladolid.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Valladolid multiplied, favored by the commercial privileges granted by the kings Alfonso VIII and Alfonso X.
Government and administration
Valladolid is a municipality, Spain’s primary local government unit. Governing and administering Valladolid is the responsibility of the Ayuntamiento de Valladolid. 27 elected municipal councilors make up the Plenary of the city council, which invests the mayor. In May 2019, there was a municipal election. Mayor Scar Puente (PSOE) has been in office since 2015. As a result of the 2019 election, he was re-elected for a second term.
