Velbert Overview
Velbert is a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia located in the district of Mettmann. Locks and fittings are produced in the town and are widely renowned worldwide.
Geography
As part of the Berg region, Velbert is located on the hills of ‘Niederberg’ (meaning Lower Mountain). On the south side of the Ruhr River, it is 20 kilometers north of Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine Westphalia.
Velbert is located at the highest point of the Niederberg region and in its center. Its average elevation is around 230 meters above sea level; its highest point, at 303 meters, is the Hordt-Berg, and its lowest point, at 70.6 meters, is Nierenhof am Deilbach. In Velbert, at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Langenberger Straße, the highest point is 263 meters above sea level.
Incorporation
Velbert was formed by merging the formerly independent cities of Velbert, Neviges, and Langenberg as part of a reform of local government districts in North Rhine-Westphalia that went into effect on Jan 1, 1975.
History
As early as 875, Velbert was ruled by the Werden abbey under Feldbrahti. A manor in Velbert, called Hof zum Hof, and the local church were donated to the abbey by Lady Adelheid around 1050. The abbey was Vogt in 1115 under Earl Adolf II von Berg. Hadenberg (later Neviges) was owned by Earl Hermann von Hardenberg in 1145. It wasn’t until 1150 that Neviges was mentioned as Navagis, and it wasn’t until 1220 that Langenberge was mentioned as Langenberge. A priestly order was founded in the church at Neviges in 1220 by Hermann von Hardenberg and his mother, the widow Hellenburgis. 1265 was the first mention of the Langenberg church; 1317 and 1343 are the first mentions of the Homberg (with jurisdiction over Velbert) and Hardenberg county courts. Hardenberg was sold by Heinrich von Hardenberg and his son (also named Heinrich) to Earl Gerhard I. von Jülich-Berg. 1380 marked the beginning of the era of the dukes’ von Berg. After paying its debt to Duke Wilhelm III von Jülich-Berg, bailiff Bertram von Gevertzhain (also known as Lützerode) received Hardenberg as a hereditary fiefdom.
Locksmithing remains an essential industry in Velbert, having been mentioned in 1508 for the first time. Velbert became a benefice with a local priest in 1518. A decade later, the von Bernsau family owned the fiefdom of Hardenberg. Velbert, Neviges, and Langenberg became Protestant after 1570; the first Berg synod was held in Neviges in 1589. Hardenberg’s owner Johann Sigismund converted to Catholicism in 1649, the Annakirche was constructed in 1670 (replaced by the Klosterkirche St. Mariä Empfängnis in 1728), and the Franciscans gained influence in 1676. In 1680, the Hardenberg monastery began construction.
Administration
Velbert is divided into three administrative areas corresponding to the three former cities: Velbert-Mitte (Central Velbert), Neviges, and Langenberg. Several suburbs surround the city, including Tönisheide, Losenburg, Nordpark, Langenhorst, Birth, Röttgen, and Hefel.
Coat of arms
The first coat of arms was created in 1882 and abolished in 1975 as part of local government reform. Velbert is known for its locksmithing industry and the lion of the Counts, later Dukes, of Berg (originally the Limburg symbol).
The heraldic symbols for the three formerly independent towns were incorporated into a new coat of arms after 1975. A more straightforward design was retained for Velbert’s key, which refers to his traditional primary industry. In the old arms of Langenberg, an oak leaf represents Langenberg. In the bit of the key, the chevrons represent the coat of arms of the lords of Hardenberg, from Neviges’ coat of arms.
Economics
Velbert’s primary traditional industry is small-scale manufacturing, primarily metal-based products, such as locks, hinges, small tools, and hose clamps. Most small- to medium-sized companies were founded as backyard forges. The automotive industry also produces parts, such as Witte Automotive and Huf, which supply vehicle access systems. Aside from this, Stein & Co Gmbh, which manufactures Sebo vacuum cleaners, is based here as well.
Transportation
An S-Bahn service runs every 30 minutes from Recklinghausen / Haltern am See – Gladbeck – Bottrop – Essen-Nierenhof – Langenberg-Neviges – Rosenhügel-Wuppertal – Hagen, which is an attractive line for commuters. There is no railway connection left to the old town of Velbert, and Cycling paths were converted to former railway tracks in 2011 within the city. In Velbert-West and Velbert-Central, the former station buildings are now restaurants, and Velbert-Tönisheide is no longer used. There were three stations on the Niederberg Railway (Wülfrath-Velbert-Heiligenhaus-Kettwig). Langenberg, Neviges, Nierenhof, and Rosenhügel are the stations that serve the city.
In addition to having a tram service, Velbert served Heidhausen, Neviges, Wülfrath, Hösel, and Heiligenhaus. Today, Velbert is connected to several surrounding cities by bus routes, and Rhein-Ruhr Verkehrsverbund encompasses the town.
