Velenje Overview
A municipality called Velenje is located in Velenje, Slovenia’s sixth-largest city. As well as the Kamnik–Savinja Alps to the west and the Pohorje Mountains to the east, the city is located in northeastern Slovenia among rolling green hills known as the Alek Valley.
Name
Velenje’s first written mention can be found in 1264 under the name Well (also under the terms Welan and Belen in 1270 and Welen and Belen in 1296). There is a connection between the names and Velen’e selo, which means ‘Velen’s village.’ Another hypothesis is that the name comes from the Slovene noun velen(J.E.), ‘pasture for livestock.’ A new name was given to the town in 1981 to honor Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito: Titovo Velenje. Before Slovenia became independent in 1991, Velenje was renamed. The settlement used to be called Wöllan in German.
Modern history
In 1889, Old Velenje (Slovenian: Staro Velenje), the old part of today’s city, consisted of only 364 residents. As a result of the lignite mining industry in the area, the town expanded before World War II.
Velenje developed rapidly after the war and became a modern city. Planning and construction of the town began in the 1950s, during the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. Gorenje, which manufactures home appliances, relocated its headquarters to the city from Gorenje, a nearby settlement.
A statue of Tito, approximately 10 meters or 33 feet tall, has stood at the center of Tito Square since its opening on September 20, 1959. Antun Augustinčič and Vladimir Herljević created the design. Edward Gierek and Nicolae Ceaușescu met on the square once, along with Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev.
Geography
Velenje is located in northeast Slovenia, 85 kilometers from its capital, Ljubljana. Maribor and Celje, the country’s second-and third-largest cities, are 75 and 25 kilometers away, respectively, and Graz (Austria) is 130 kilometers away. Trains and buses connect Velenje with other destinations, and cars are easily accessible as well.

Climate
Summers in Velenje are warm and wet, winters are cold and snowy, and partly cloudy weather is typical. The average temperature is usually between 22°F and 78°F throughout the year, and it rarely falls below 10°F or rises above 88°F. Warm-weather activities are best enjoyed in Velenje between mid-June and early September.
Culture
Built in 1959 for Oton Gaspari, the Velenje Cultural Center opened in November 1960 in the northwestern part of the square. This building was decorated with reliefs by Stojan Batič and its interior by Riko Debenjak. Velenje’s subcultures were centered in this hall during the 1990s. A variety of cultural activities are held at Velenje Festival, which is a public institute today. In addition to the puppet theatre and the dance theatre, the hall also houses a concert hall.
Economy and education
Velenje has a solid economic infrastructure, making it one of Slovenia’s most important financial centers. Several industries contribute to economic development, including energy, metal processing, and construction. Immediately west of the city is the only lignite mine in Slovenia. Trade services, craft services, and environmental protection have been experiencing solid growth. There are three large shopping centers in the city. Velenje Shopping Center, Velenjka, and Hypermarket Mercator Velenje are among them.
In the Savinja–«Alek region, Velenje serves as a hub for employment, administration, and education. As well as six primary schools and seven secondary/high schools, there is a music school and a university.
Transportation
It takes about an hour to drive from Ljubljana, and walking or biking through Velenje’s city center is relatively easy. Renting a bicycle from Villa Bianca’s tourist office is possible.
It takes about two to three hours to get to Ljubljana and Maribor by train during the week, all of which require a transfer to Celje. One-way fares range from €8 to €13, Sundays have no trains, and Saturdays only have four. Just west of Velenje’s center is the city’s train station.
There is a bus station in Velenje on Alek Street (Slovene: Aleška Cesta), just east of the Mercator shopping center. The number of buses going to Ljubljana is around five on weekdays, and the number of buses going to Celje is approximately 22. Buses frequently run on weekends, both locally and regionally. There is no charge for using the public bus system in Velenje.

Sports
Velenje is home to Adventure Race Slovenia, a 400-kilometer (250 mi) adventure race known throughout Europe and held every weekend in June. As a result of Lake Dragon Scout Group’s initiative, it was first held in 2003.
NK Rudar Velenje and R.K. Gorenje Velenje are two handball clubs based in Velenje. Among its athletes is Jolanda Čeplak, a Slovenian middle-distance athlete and Olympic bronze medalist. Katarina Srebotnik, a Slovenian tennis player, is also from this city.
Religion
Velenje’s parish church was built in the 13th century and was added to in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Martin in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. Approximately one-third of Velenje’s population describes themselves as atheists today.
