Velez-Malaga Overview

Vélez-Málaga is a municipality located in the province of Málaga, within the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia. As the region’s largest city, it holds great importance, and Vélez is the local name for it. Located in Velez-Málaga is the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of Costa del Sol-Axarquía. Costa del Sol is the region in which the municipality is located.

It is 4 km inland from Torre del Mar, but unlike the coastal resort does not rely heavily on tourism. Velez-Málaga is a market city and a major regional farmers’ supply center.

Population

78,166 people were living in Vélez Málaga in 2015. In 2010, Vélez-Málaga had over 75,000 inhabitants, ranking fourth in the province behind the capital, Marbella and Mijas. In general, Vélez Málaga has experienced rapid demographic growth in recent decades. The population of La Axarqua is composed of people from all over, as well as aliens. The communities of gypsies in La Villa, La Gloria, Carabanchel, and Las Malvinas are the most densely populated.

History

Although the discovery of the Iron Age remains in the old town of Vélez-Málaga, the first solid news comes from the Phoenicians, who settled on the coast of the present municipality in the 8th century B.C. C., particularly in estuaries of rivers, since they document the archaeological sites of Tuscan and Chorreras. In the area of Manganeto, where the original Phoenician jetty of this settlement and the Greek amphoras Containers of attic oil was found, remains of nozzles and slag revealed the exploitation of iron metallurgy, an activity closely associated with port and commerce. As Phoenician fishing activity developed, this pier would have been used extensively for mooring Phoenician vessels. The Roman occupation is evident in different deposits, but especially in the Cerro del Mar necropolis of the maritime city of Maenoba in the Torre del Mar area. The Romans developed salting and garum production, whose bases had already been settled by the Phoenicians. Incipient agriculture and fishing were also created during this time.

Christian authorities introduced a new concept of the city, and shortly after the conquest, their urban morphology changed substantially. Squares and new civil and religious buildings were ordered, resulting in significant spatial transformations. On the old mosques were built the churches of Santa Mara, San Juan, San Roque, San Juan Evangelista, the convent of San Francisco, and the hermitages of San Sebastián, San Cristóbal, and Santa Catalina. A sizeable urban development occurred in the second half of the 16th century with the construction of monasteries such as Nuestra Senora de Gracia and San José de la Soledad. Los Lazarinos and San Marcos hospitals are developed in terms of civil buildings.

The town had about 24,000 residents when the Andalusian earthquake struck in 1884. 1,291 houses collapsed, 500 of which became uninhabitable, and the remainder were damaged. In addition to the six dead, 16 and 30 people were injured. There was more damage in the lower part of town, built on clays and sands, than in the upper part, made on shales. In the early 20th century, the railroad reached Torre del Mar and later Velez-Málaga, connected to Malaga’s provincial capital by the Suburban Railways of Malaga. The Spanish Civil War and the subsequent establishment of a Spanish State led to many calamities for the municipality, especially during the mass evacuation of Málaga’s civilian population into Almeria during the so-called massacre of the Málaga-Almería highway. In the 1960s, the city joined the tourist boom, radically transforming Torre del Mar by constructing large apartment buildings.

Transportation

Ventas de Zafarraya was reached by a railway built from Vélez in August 1922. It was supposed to continue to Alhama de Granada but went to Ventas. After road transport became more efficient, the railway became unprofitable and closed on 12 May 1960. A tram runs from Vélez to Torre del Mar, with many shops and restaurants lacking in Vélez. The service, however, ceased in April 2012 due to funding issues. The state-of-the-art Torre del Mar hospital and the El Ingenio shopping mall are located along the tramline, which includes Eroski.

As a result of the extensive growth, the transportation infrastructure is currently being expanded. The bus terminal is also being developed, with service through Torre, María Zambrano, and the Málaga Airport. Through the transportation infrastructure, buses and trains are also available from Vélez to Spain’s larger cities. The fishing port and airport in Velez-Málaga are both located in the town. Through the center of its territory, there is a junction with the Carretera Nacional (national highway).

Geography

Approximately 25 km of coastline is within the municipality’s boundaries. One of the most significant watercourses is the Velez River.

Culture

Every year, the Royal San Miguel festival is held at the end of September and the beginning of October. Santa Ana, Santiago (St James), and Veladilla el Carmen are some other celebrated festivals. The town’s calendar also includes Holy Week, known as Semana Santa. One of the most notable in Andalusia, with 19 comrades (brotherhoods) and elaborate processions commemorating Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Cockfighting is still conducted publicly in Velez-Málaga, one of the last places in Europe.

The town has an active Flamenco music scene centered around its local pe*a (Pe*a Flamenca Ni*o de Vélez) and Flamenco Abierto, an organization that puts on regular performances across the Axarqu*a region, recently attracting El Pele, Diego Carrasco & Family, and Jorge Pardo to its performances. Jorge Pardo plays jazz music.

Demographics

There is an influx of expatriates and immigrants from other parts of Spain in every aspect of Velez. Among the ethnic minority groups are Gypsies, a small Chinese community, Moroccans, sub-Saharan Africans, and expatriates from other European Union countries, particularly Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. A total of 2,743 residents did not have Spanish nationality in 2003.

Towards the separation of Torre del Mar from Velez, there has been a movement with its political party since 1990.

Climate

The summers in Vélez-Málaga are short, hot, arid, and mostly clear, while the winters are long, cold, windy, and partly cloudy. The average temperature varies between 45°F and 88°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 38°F or rising above 95°F. Mid-June to early September is the best time to visit Vélez-Málaga for hot-weather activities.
