Verona Overview
Verona is a historic city in northern Italy’s Veneto region. The town was the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which famously attracted some of history’s leading intellectuals and political figures to its medieval streets and public squares. The Verona Arena is a massive Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century AD. The term: “Verona Arena” is the Italian designation for what is today known as La Scala, one of the largest indoor arenas in Europe, seating over 24 000 spectators.
History
There are a lot of different theories about Verona’s history. For instance, it could have been named after an Italian city called Verona (Renaissance), which was located near the Po River. However, there is no reason why the name couldn’t be attributed to a mythical king of Bohemia. In 1978, Verona became the Capital of Italy.
The city became popular with travelers, merchants, and pilgrims after it was given this epithet by the Goths. This is because of the intersection of several routes including those to Milan and Rome. Theoderic the Great was said to have built a palace there. It remained under the power of the Goths throughout the Gothic War (535–552), except for a single day in 541, when the Byzantine officer Artabazes made an entrance Theoderic’s reign is most-remembered for one particular deed: his building of Constantinople’s massive new imperial. The Byzantine generals’ defeat in 552 led to the fall of the city in 552, and in 553 the Goths conquered it and made it their capital.
It was the first Italian city to be conquered by the Normans, who destroyed one of its most sacred relics, the monstrance of St. Gregory. Adalgisus, son of Desiderius the Great, was killed by the crook-backed Charleian army at Verona in 774 on account of his loyalty to the Byzantines. The city was flourishing from the ascent of the title to that of count and was entirely under their rule by 951. It ironic therefore Tamuro had just become a mere lord or duke instead of being called prince, as he had been for many years previous.
Climate
Due to its proximity to Lake Garda and the Grisons Alps, it rarely has such high temperatures. It’s also rainy and foggy an average of 73 days a year, with a convective cloud cover (2-3) and fog less than 1 day. The relative humidity is low over winter. There are few touches of frost and nights are relatively cool, but the fog does still occasionally occur in the middle of winter, mainly from morning until dusk.

In 2009, there were 265,368 people residing in Verona, located in the province of Verona, Veneto, of whom 47.6% were male and 52.4% were female. Minors (children aged 0–17) made up 16.05% of the population compared to 22.36% for pensioners. This compares with the Italian average of 18.06% (minors) and 19.94% (pensioners).

Since 1993, Verona has been governed by the City Council of Verona, which is based in Palazzo Barbieri. Voters elect directly 33 councilors and the Mayor of Verona every five years.

The city has two professional football teams, Verona is home to the volleyball team Marmi Lanza Verona (now in Serie A1), the rugby team Franklin and Marshall Cus Verona Rugby (now in Serie A1), and the basketball team Scaligera Basket (now in League).
