The city and municipality of Verviers, located in the Belgian province of Liège, is part of the Wallonia region. Ensival, Heusy, Lambermont, Petit-Rechain, Stembert, and Verviers are among the municipality districts.
Since the development of the town’s textile industry and later its tourist industry, water has played a vital role in its economy. As a result, many fountains have been built in Verviers, earning it the “Water Capital of Wallonia.” The town is the headquarters of the two Walloon public water distribution and treatment institutions.
Flint and bone fragments and Roman coins were found in the area, indicating a long settlement history. During the 4th century, Germanic tribes from the east constantly pushed against the Romans. Initially successful at containing them, they ultimately conceded defeat at the end of the 5th century, allowing Clovis’s Salian Franks to occupy the region. A vicus was maintained in neighboring Theux by the Merovingian kings in the Verviers area, which was covered in forests. Additionally, the monks of the nearby Abbey of Stavelot gradually Christianized the site.
A final step in consolidating the Prince-Bishopric of Liège was Notker of Liège’s acquisition of the Marquisate of Franchimont from Charles the Simple. In 1014, Liège took direct control of the marquisate, an act confirmed by Frederick Barbarossa and Pope Adrian IV.
It was in the 15th century that the textile industry was first mentioned in this area. Due in part to the Eighty Years War raging in the neighboring Netherlands, the cloth industry eventually replaced the older metallurgical works. However, the town remained relatively small. Verviers was recognized as one of the prince-bishopric’s bonnes villes (main cities) only in 1651 after the expansion of the fulleries.
As the 18th century ended, the French Revolution disturbed the world. As a result of the annexation of Liège to France in 1795, Liège suffered a steep economic decline and unprecedented poverty. After the Battle of Waterloo (1815), the city’s fortunes began to rise again. At the eastern end of Wallonia’s industrial backbone, the sillon industriel was Verviers. William Cockerill used British know-how to start a new era in Verviers’ textile industry. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, roads were paved, gas lighting was installed, and the city doubled in size. With Bradford, Verviers shared the “Wool Capital of the World” title after World War I.
Verviers’s wool and textile industry contributed significantly to the town’s growth and reputation. In the 1950s, however, the local factories were forced to close one after another due to international competition, resulting in the town’s economic decline. There has been a slow recovery in the economy since the mid-1990s, but it remains fragile. The most affected areas have seen several commercial complexes open in recent years.
The Aqualangue association of Verviers runs two attractions in the city center, one for wool and one for water, “aqua.” At the tourist office for the Pays du Vesdre, the Maison de l’Eau presents Verviers’ fascinating relationship with water and the construction of the Gileppe Dam nearby in the 19th century.
Its collection developed from that of its founder, painter, historian, and collector Jean-Simon Renier, who amassed engravings, ceramics, sculptures, and paintings dating back to the 1500s.
Completed in 1780, the Hôtel de Ville has nine bays, with the middle three projecting flanked by stairs. The bell tower atop the building chimes the city’s anthem, the Barcarolle de Verviers, every quarter hour.
The Verviers-born patissier and chocolatier Jean-Philippe Darcis is arguably the biggest name in Belgian confectionery. In 2001, he received the International Belgian Chocolate Prize, which granted him the title of Ambassador of Belgian Chocolate for life.
An 18th-century townhouse on Rue des Raines displays dainty decorative arts from the 1700s and 1800s, historic trade items in Verviers, and impressive prehistoric, Roman, and Merovingian finds.
Built in the 17th century, this church is attached to a convent for the Franciscan Recollect order.
Located west of Verviers on the edge of the Herve Plateau, this leisure complex features a 17th-century château and parkland.
The Royal Harmony Society was founded in 1829 and bought this tract of land for its clubhouse and park. The site was planted with horse chestnut trees, one of which is among the largest in Wallonia, with a trunk circumference of more than five meters.
In this park located south of Verviers, you’ll find the ruins of a castle that have long since been demolished. There are 10 hectares of rolling greenery in the Parc de Séroule, where you will forget you are so close to the city center.
Located on a panoramic spur above the Hogne Valley, this dramatic ruins of an 11th-century castle can be reached within 15 minutes from Verviers. Down the centuries, it was adapted to changing military needs as a stronghold for the Principality of Liège.
