Vicenza Overview
Vicenza is located in northeastern Italy in the Veneto region. A 16th-century architect named Andrea Palladio designed its elegant buildings. In addition, there is the Palladian Basilica and the Palazzo Chiericati, which now houses an art gallery. An indoor replica of a classic outdoor theater, also designed by Palladio, is nearby at the Teatro Olimpico. There are four identical facades on the hilltop Villa La Rotonda on the outskirts of town.
History
The Italic Euganei tribe settled Vicentia in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., followed by the Paleo-Veneti tribe. As the Romans fought the Celtic tribes of north-western Italy, they allied themselves with the Paleo-Veneti. Paleo-Veneti (whose culture reflected Etruscan and Greek values more than Celtic values) gradually assimilated into Roman society. A de facto Roman center in 157 BC, Vicetia or Vincentia was named “victorious” in honor of its victory.
Vicetia’s citizens received Roman citizenship and were incorporated into the Roman tribe Romilia in 49 B.C. The city was known for its agriculture, brickworks, marble quarry, and wool industry, and being a way-station on the road between Mediolanum (Milan) and Aquileia, near Tergeste (Trieste). However, it was overshadowed by its neighbor Patavium (Padua). A few Roman city ruins remain outside the Porta Santa Croce, including three bridges spanning the Bacchiglione and Retrone rivers.
Heruls, Vandals, Alaric and his Visigoths, and the Huns lay waste to the city during the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Still, it recovered after the Ostrogoth conquest in 489 AD before being conquered by the Byzantine Empire shortly afterward. In addition to being a Lombard city, it was also an essential Frankish city. By the end of the 6th century, Vicenza was home to many Benedictine monasteries.
Upon Otto III’s handover of the city’s government to the bishop in 1001, the community was allowed to develop, eventually separating from the episcopal authority. Padua and Treviso joined the Lombard League (1164–1167) with the support of its podestà, Ezzelino II il Balbo, who was the captain of the league against Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. However, as soon as peace was restored, the old rivalry between Padua, Bassano, and other cities was revived, as well as internal conflicts between the Vivaresi (Ghibellines) and the Maltraversi (Guelphs).
Climate
Vicenza has warm and humid summers, cold winters, and partly cloudy skies all year. Temperatures typically range from 31°F to 87°F throughout the year, with temperatures rarely falling below 24°F or exceeding 94°F. The best months for hot-weather activities in Vicenza are late June through late August.
Demographics
Vicenza, located in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, had 114,268 residents in 2007, 47.6% male and 52.4% female. Compared to pensioners, minors (children ages 18 and under) made up 17.17% of the population.
Economy
Agriculture is the main economic activity in the surrounding country. As another specialty of Bassano, cherries and asparagus are typical products of the area. Wine, wheat, corn, and olive oil are significant products (in the Barbarano area). Several marble quarries, sulfur mines, copper and silver mines, lignite and kaolin beds, and mineral springs exist, with Recoaro being one of the most famous.
Clothing and jewelry factories are the elitè sectors. Among the significant vicentino clothing brands are Diesel, Pal Zileri, Marzotto, Bottega Veneta, and Marlboro Classics. Two times a year (in January and September), Vicenza hosts the World Gold Exposition.
Transport
Vicenza’s railway station was opened in 1846 and is part of the Milan-Venice railway and a nexus for two branch lines, Schio and Treviso.

Designed by Palladio in 1580 and completed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1584, after Palladio died. A Renaissance adaptation of ancient theaters, this is a wood and stucco construction. Be aware of the distance you must walk inside the theater as you enter the building.
Basilica Palladiana and Museo Palladiano
Built as a meeting place for the Grand Council, the basilica is not a church. Vicenza’s early reputation as a center for gold work is reflected in the lower level, which featured luxury shops for nobles of Palladio’s day.
Walk to La Rotonda
A 10-minute walk from Villa Valmarana is Palladio’s most famous building, Villa Almerico Capra, also known as La Rotonda. This villa was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and built by a priest upon his retirement from the Vatican.
Basilica di Monte Berico
The Portici di Monte Berico, an arcade built in 1746 on the southern outskirts of Vicenza, leads to the Basilica di Monte Berico. In 1668, Bologna architect C Borella built this pilgrimage church. Based on the Rotonda, the basilica has a centralized plan.
Villa Valmarana (Ai Nani)
This 17th-century villa is known locally as Ai Nani, a reference to the dwarfed statues that adorn its walls. Villa Valmarana is surrounded by high walls that are crowned with stubby statues. One of the main tourist attractions is the magnificent frescoes adorning the residence and guest house, painted in 1757.
Palazzo Leoni Montanari
Although most of Vicenza’s buildings are Palladian Renaissance, Palazzo Leoni Montanari’s interior is unabashedly late Baroque. It houses priceless art as well as lavishly decorated interiors.
Piazza dei Signori and Loggia del Capitaniato
The old Roman forum was located in Piazza dei Signori, surrounded by two columns from the Venetian period and a defensive tower built in 1174, the Torre di Piazza. An entire side of the piazza is occupied by the Basilica Palladiana, which is flanked by the Loggia del Capitaniato, now part of the Town Hall.
Palazzo Chiericati (Museo Civico)
Located at the northeast end of the Corso Andrea Palladio, the Renaissance Palazzo Chiericati houses the Museo Civico, Vicenza’s municipal museum. A picture gallery displays the city’s painting collection on the main floor, while an archeological collection is on the ground floor.
Santa Corona
Located in the heart of Old Town, this Gothic church houses a holy relic from Christ’s Crown of Thorns, a thorn from his crown of thorns. There are several notable paintings in the church. Above the fifth altar on the left, Giovanni Bellini painted the Baptism of Christ, and on the right on the third altar is a Veronese painting called Adoration of the Magi.
Corso Andrea Palladio
The Corso Andrea Palladio, located northwest of Piazza dei Signori, is lined with palaces designed by Palladio. In the early 17th century, Vincenzo Scamozzi developed the Palazzo del Comune, which you’ll see halfway along the road.
