Vigo Overview

The city of Vigo is located on Spain’s northwest coast, and several islands of the Atlantic Islands National Park protect the mouth of the nearby Vigo Estuary. Known for its rich birdlife and crescent-shaped Rodas Beach, the Cés are known for their birdlife. In the city’s old quarter, you will find the neoclassical Church of Santa María. Reconstructed ancient dwellings can be found at the Castro de Vigo archaeological site.

History

Vigo, a small village near Tui, suffered several Viking attacks during the Early Middle Ages when it belonged to Galician-speaking neighboring towns. Because of its small population, it was only considered a villa in the 15th century, when the earliest records were kept.

The city was attacked several times between the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1585 and 1589, Francis Drake raided and temporarily occupied the town during an unsuccessful counter-Armada attack, burning many buildings. The city was attacked by a Turkish fleet several decades later. Thus, the city’s walls were built in 1656 during the reign of Philip IV of Spain. It is still possible to see some of them.

The kings of Spain granted Vigo several privileges during this period, despite the attacks.

In 1702, the Battle of Vigo Bay took place, and in 1719, a British force occupied the city for ten days because a Spanish fleet attempted to invade Scotland in support of the Jacobites.

Spain was annexed to the Napoleonic Empire by the French Army in 1808, although Vigo remained unconquered until January 1809. In addition, Vigo was the first city in Galicia to be freed from French rule, which is celebrated on March 28 as the Reconquista (reconquest from the French during the Peninsular War). The city of Pontevedra, within the province of Pontevedra, was designated the provincial capital in 1833.

A tax-free zone was established in Vigo in 1947, allowing companies to set up there for free. An Industrial Development Pole was established in 1964, an unusual move for a province outside its capital. As a result, Vigo overgrew in the 20th century. Due to continuous urban-planning changes, it has less structured urban planning than other Galician cities like Pontevedra and A Corua.

Toponym

The hillfort (Castro) and Roman settlement founded Vigo’s urban area. Generally speaking, Vigo is named after the Latin word vicus spectrum, which means “small village.”

In both Galician and Spanish, Vigo is pronounced [ˈbiɣo].

Vigo is known as Cidade olívica (city of olives). It is said that after Isabel de Castilla conflicted with Juana la Beltraneja – in which Galician nobility sided with the latter – the victor ordered all olive trees in Galicia to be cut down since they symbolized peace. Vigo’s tree, however, could not be uprooted as it was planted on sacred ground. The tree is depicted on the city seal, and a descendant of it still stands in Vigo’s city center.

Location

To the northeast, Vigo borders the municipality of Redondela; to the east, Mos; to the south, O Porriño and Gondomar; and to the southwest, Nigrán. Cangas and Moa’a are located on the other side of the bay.

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification, Vigo has a transitional climate between the oceanic climate “Cfb” and the warm-summer Mediterranean climate “Csb.” Despite Vigo’s reputation as the rainiest city in Galicia, its weather is closer to that of the Pacific Northwest region of North America, which has a noticeable drying trend in the summer. Vigo has an average annual temperature of 14 °C (57 °F).

Demographics

Vigo is the 14th-largest metropolitan area in Spain, with 293,642 inhabitants (198,537 in the city) and a metro population of 478,508.

Data from 2013 shows that 7.68% of the population spoke exclusively Galician, 51.39% spoke Spanish, 11.38% spoke Galician more often than Spanish, and 29.55% said Spanish more often than Galician. In Galicia, Vigo has the least number of Galician speakers.

Government and administration

Vigo is a municipality, the primary local government level in Spain. In Galician, the Ayuntamiento (concello) is the body that governs and administers the city. In turn, the mayor is invested by the plenary of the concello, which is composed of 27 elected municipal councilors.

Education

Vigo University is located 15 kilometers from the city in the parish of Zamáns, in a mountainous area. Ocean-based industries are studied at this center, and Ourense and Pontevedra are university campuses.

A split from Santiago de Compostela University led to the founding of the University of Vigo in 1990. The Zamáns Campus is home to a wide variety of modern architecture designed by such architects as Enric Miralles, Alfonso Penelas, Pilar Dez and Alberto Noguerol, César Portela, and Gabriel Santos Zas.

15 Best Things to Do in Vigo (Spain)

  1. Castro Fortress

    – From this 17th-century fortress, you can see the city and its epic landscapes at their best. In this commanding position, you can enjoy all the sights of Vigo’s estuary, harbor, historic quarter, mountainscapes, and Cés Islands.
  2. Parque del Monte Castro

    – Surrounded by the fort, this park is more of a wild mountain than an urban pleasure garden. Even though Monte Castro is a challenging walk, it has many exciting features to keep you entertained.
  3. Cíes Islands

    – This uninhabited archipelago at the Vigo Estuary’s entrance is worth a day or two’s visit. Ferries run from the harbor to the islands at roughly half-hour intervals throughout the summer by two companies (Mar de Ons and Nabia Naviera).
  4. Beaches on the Cíes Islands

    – These bays are among the most beautiful on the planet and could deserve another entry. Playa de Rodas often makes the top ten lists of the world’s best beaches, and it’s an almost-paradisiacal place to sunbathe and swim in summer.
  5. Fish and Seafood

    – Try the divine oysters caught right in the Vigo Estuary: At Calle de las Ostras (street of the oysters), you can have them raw with a pinch of lemon and a glass of Albariño wine. According to locals, Vigo’s fish and seafood are excellent because of the water’s temperatures and type of plankton.
  6. Galician Wine

    – Vigo is in Galicia’s Ras Baixas wine region, which produces crisp, acidic white wines from the Albario grape variety. With the region’s fantastic seafood, they make the perfect pairing.
  7. Casco Vello

    – Vigo’s old town is set on a slope that meets the estuary at the old port, with alleyways leading to elegant arcaded squares such as Praza da Constitución. It is a part of the city with fishermen’s houses alongside grander buildings like plush townhouses and the 19th-century church of Santa Mara.
  8. The Ensanche

    – Vigo’s canning industry became one of the city’s primary sources of income during the 19th century. Most of the entrepreneurs behind this boom were from Catalonia, and their elegant Belle Époque apartment buildings still stand in Ensanche, east of Casco Vello.
  9. Samil Beach

    – Located at the Lagares River and the Atlantic junction, Samil promises perfect sunbathing, strolling, and seeing Vigo’s mountains and islands. Swimming pools, basketball courts, and five-a-side football pitches are all available on the 1,700-metre-long beach.
  10. Ermita de Nosa Señora da Guia

    – Located on the city’s northeast side, just next to the estuary, is the 100-meter Monte da Guia. It’s one of the city’s largest parks and offers an instant escape from the traffic and activity on Vigo’s streets, covered in evergreens and deciduous trees.
  11. Quiñones de León Museum

    – Set in a stately 17th-century mansion, the Castrelos “Pazo” is the regal home of this art museum. Here are paintings by Galician artists from the 20th century and a few pieces from Madrid’s Prado museum that are stored here.
  12. MARCO – Vigo Museum of Contemporary Art

    – Located right in the center of town, this museum utilizes Vigo’s former jail and courthouse, built in 1861. Based on the principles of the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, the prison had a “panopticon” practical design, and its former prison courtyards had glass roofs that let in plenty of light.
  13. Museo do Mar de Galicia

    – Discover Galicia’s long connection to the ocean through the exhibits and local ecosystems. You can see antique diving equipment and navigation instruments in the room devoted to oceanography and underwater exploration.
  14. Hiking

    – Vigo is a low-lying enclave surrounded by a mountainous landscape densely covered with oak, pine, and eucalyptus trees. Remember to bring your walking shoes, as you’ll be treated to even more fantastic ocean and city views.
  15. Baiona

    – Spanish tourists flock to Baiona in August to escape the heat and enjoy the cooler weather on the Atlantic. There’s still a charming old harbor, framed by the dark green hills of the headland to the north, which supported the town’s economy before tourism.
