Vila Nova de Gaia Overview

Vila Nova de Gaia is a hotspot for port wine enthusiasts. You can find cellars that offer tours and tastings. The coast in Porto is also famous, with its sandy beaches like Praia da Madalena and the scenic riverside road Cais de Gaia, where you’ll find many cafes to enjoy a drink. Across the river Douro, you will have just as pleasant views. The old fishing town of Afurada is a gorgeous place to visit, and it has a small selection of restaurants that serve tasty grilled seafood dishes.

The city had a population of 178,255 in 2001. The municipality covers 168.46 km² and has 302,295 inhabitants in total (2011). This makes it the largest municipality in Norte Region. The 14 towns of Gaia, Porto, and 12 more make up the Porto Metropolitan Area.

History

Vila Nova de Gaia already existed under the Roman Empire as the city of Cale. After a Celtic village or other Neolithic settlement, it developed into its current form. There’s a Celtic root, “Gall-” that Celts refer to themselves with. Cale is likely derived from that, given the shared sounds between this word and the words Gallia (Latin: Gaul) and Galician. The river’s name is the Celtic Douro, which means “deep water, water or river.” A much more significant portion of the population likely lived on the south side of the Douro during Roman times, and a smaller settlement existed on the north side around the deep water port, now Ribeira in Porto. In the high medieval times, the port city had the name “Portus Cale” (Latin for “port” and “Cale”). Role of the important trade of the Douro river, which is easily navigable up to the Régua deep inland- Porto ended up as the essential part of town with a Bishopric and merchants established.

With the Moorish invasions in the 8th century, the Christianity vs. Islam divide was primarily centered around Eastern Spain. Being constantly raided and counter-raved, the town of Cale or Gaia was deserted, and most inhabitants found refuge in Porto on the North side of the river. During this time period, the 10th century, the late medieval Legend of Gaia takes place.

After capturing the south side of the Douro River in 1035, with the departure or expulsion of Muslim people from that area, a group of colonists from northern Portugal settled in exchange for better lands. These migrants refounded the old city of Gaia under a new name, Vila Nova de Gaia (new town of Gaia), around the old castle and ruins of “old Gaia.”

Contemporary documents frequently referred to the name of the double city of Porto and Gaia as “villa de Portucale,” and it was not uncommon for the county that lay within the Kingdom of León, centered around it, to be given this moniker as well. After gaining its independence, this county expanded and became the Kingdom of Portugal.

Coat of arms and flag

The Coat of Arms includes two bunches of grapes on the bottom and a castle over water, with a person blowing the horn. The grapevine symbolizes the connection between Port wine and the city of Oporto, as the cellars where this wine is made are located downtown.

The flag features the coat of arms on an eight-piece gyrfalcon or gyronny field. The first line is dark yellow, then black, and goes from north-northeast to south-southwest.

Climate

In Vila Nova de Gaia, summers are warm (+22 °C) and dry with some rain, while winters are cold (-2 °C) and wet with a lot of snow. The average temperature for this region usually varies from 43°F to 76°F, with the freezing points below 34F and the warmest points above 87F. The best time of year to visit Vila Nova de Gaia for warm-weather activities is mid-June to early September.

Best Things to Do in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal)

  1. Port

    – Next to Vila Nova de Gaia’s Douro River, you can stand where barrels of wine and port were unloaded for hundreds of years. The area transports mature barrels of wine from the Upper Douro Valley in the east, which all comes to this village so they can be exported.
  2. Port Lodges

    – One of the most complex decisions is choosing which port lodge you want to visit. They’ll typically offer you information about the different types of ports (tawny, white, crusted, and vintage) and how they change over time when stored in their porous oak barrels.
  3. Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar

    – The 16th-century Gaia Monastery, which offers a close view of Porto’s world-famous Dom Luís I Bridge and the Douro River, is one of the oldest landmarks in Gaia and a fantastic place to visit on day or night.
  4. Teleférico de Gaia

    – This cable car was opened in 2011, and people have used it a lot since then. It takes you up and down the high south bank of the Douro river. The top station is at the Serra do Pilar monastery in Gaia, where people would get off from Porto if they wanted to transfer over.
  5. Casa-Museu Teixeira Lopes

    – It’s okay to know the Portuguese art scene to enjoy this museum. The sculptor António Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942) was a local artist, so his work is all over Porto. His brother even designed a palace in 1895.
  6. Douro River Trip

Jetties along the riverside of Vila Nova de Gaia are lined with boats ready to take you on short-day cruises along the Douro. You’ll be able to see barrels of wine being rolled off the old Rabelo boats for the first time in centuries.
  7. Dom Luís I Bridge

    – Porto is one of Portugal’s most iconic cities. One of the reasons it’s so distinctive is this bridge, which was completed in 1880 and was the world’s tallest until 1901 when the Brooklyn Bridge was finished. The designer – Théophile Seyrig – had formerly led the design of Paris’ Eiffel Tower.” One of its features is that it has two levels: the upper level is for Porto’s light rail system and pedestrians, while the lower section is for road traffic.
  8. Capela do Senhor da Pedra

    – Beautiful scenery awaits you at Praia de Miramar in Gulpilhares, Portugal. The Senhor da Pedra is a 17th-century Baroque chapel embedded into a rocky outcrop directly in front of the ocean. Whatever the season, it’s worth taking some stunning photos here.
  9. Praia da Granja

    – One of the loveliest beaches in Vila, Nova de Gaia is the southernmost one, which also has access to beautiful mansions and holiday homes. These have Blue Flag status every year and attract many visitors.
  10. Jardim do Morro

    – Located just next to the train station, this park is blessed with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The wind from the ocean blows in gently, and there are some shops selling souvenirs as well.
  11. Zoo Santo Inácio

    – If you have kids, there’s an excellent option for families in Vila Nova de Gaia. The zoo has 1,000 inhabitants from 300 species, with a tropical greenhouse, reptile house, and educational farm.
  12. Estação Litoral da Aguda

    – The Aguda aquarium is home to more than 700 animals and aquatic life from 60 species. Some of them are octopuses, spider crabs, and turtles.
  13. Parque Biológico de Gaia

    – The Avintes Outdoor Attraction is a great stop for children and adults alike. You can learn more about regional flora and fauna in a fun and interactive way. The park has ecological purposes because of the proximity of the Porto conurbation, and it’s created a space where more than 40 different bird species come and make their nests.
  14. More Beaches

    – There are many other beaches in Vila Nova de Gaia, with more blue-flag beaches than any other part of Portugal.
  15. Porto

If you’re staying on the south bank of the river, Porto is just a short bridge crossing away. You’ll find loads to do there, and it’ll feel very different from what you know of Portugal.
