The Belgian municipality of Vilvoorde is located in the Flemish province of Flemish Brabant. As well as Vilvoorde proper, the city includes Koningslo, Houtem, and Peutie, a small town.
Vilvoorde speaks Dutch as its official language. An estimated 33.7% of the population speaks French, mainly in the Koningslo and Beauval quarters bordering Brussels. Three members of the 33-seat local council represent the French-speaking minority. In addition to its Spanish minority, the city also has a sizeable Italian minority.
Near the river Zenne, the Nervii and the Romans probably settled already. Filfurdo was first mentioned in a 779 document where Pippin of Herstal ceded this territory to the Abbey of Chèvremont, near Liège. There is a possibility that this name is derived from the words equivalent to a villa at the ford or river crossing.
During the 12th century, a small town grew and quickly became a target for the ambitions of Brabant’s dukes and Grimbergen’s lords. A charter of rights was granted to the city by Henry I, Duke of Brabant, as early as 1192, primarily to ensure the support of the inhabitants against powerful neighboring Flanders. Vilvoorde’s defense walls and export rights gave it a huge economic boost, mostly thanks to the cloth industry. As a result of its location on the Zenne, Vilvoorde became an important military center and could compete with Leuven and Brussels for the title of a most critical city in Brabant in the 14th century.
As a result of Brussels’ competition, a general malaise in the textile industry, and epidemics and wars, both political and religious, Vilvoorde suffered a prolonged decline between the 15th and 19th centuries.
William Tyndale, the translator of the Bible into English, was executed here in October 1536. Anna Utenhoven, an Anabaptist accused of heresy, was buried alive at Vilvoorde in 1597 – the last Protestant martyr in the history of the Habsburg Netherlands. Both Jan van Casembroot and Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem, were executed in Vilvoorde.

Summers in Vilvoorde is pleasant and partly cloudy, while winters are cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. The annual average temperature ranges between 34°F and 74°F, rarely falling below 22°F or rising above 85°F. It is best to visit Vilvoorde during the summer, from late June to early September, if you are looking for warm-weather activities.
Vilvoorde was at the height of its economic and political power during the 14th century, so a new, appropriately grand Gothic church was built.
Named after a fountain near the lock of the old Brussels-Rupelmonde canal where skippers would stop for water, this sophisticated estate is one of Belgium’s oldest landscape parks.
Built over a 14th-century ducal castle, the forbidding Neoclassical prison just off the Brussels-Scheldt canal was constructed in 1779. During the construction of the prison, the castle’s materials were reused.
In April 2018, an 18-month project completed the transformation of the leading market square. As a result, Grote Markt became a giant parking lot with loose cobblestones that posed a hazard for pedestrians.
The city hall, in Neoclassical style from the early 1870s, is hard to miss on the south side of the Grote Markt. The Stadhuis stands out against the primarily discreet, low-rise architecture in the square with its window pediments, pilasters, niches, and corbels.
West of the railway station, Hanssenspark was named after Edmond Hanssens, mayor of Vilvoorde, when the park opened at the end of the 19th century. On a section of the rampart’s moat, it was planted in an English landscape style around a one-acre pond.
Across the canal in Grimbergen lies the oldest inhabited Norbertine abbey in Belgium. It was founded in the 1120s, razed, and rebuilt in the 12th, 16th, and then the early 19th century after being dissolved for a few decades during the French Revolution.
A ruined castle situated within a moat on its wooded estate, the Prinsenbos, for centuries, served as a residence for the lords and princes of Grimbergen.
Wander through idyllic woodlands, meadows, vegetable gardens, past goats, chickens, donkeys, and cows at Ferme Nos Pilifs
Get to the center of Brussels in a scenic, punctual, and congestion-proof manner with the Waterbus. In 2013, this service on the Brussels-Scheldt Canal was launched, running between Vilvoorde centrum and Place Sainctelette in the capital.
