Volos Overview
Volos is a coastal city in Thessaly and is about 330km north of Athens. It has 612,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Magnesia regional unit.
Location
Built at the innermost point of the Pagasetic Gulf and the foot of Mount Pelion. The city spreads in the plain on the foothills of Mount Pelion, bordering two nearby towns on either side – Agria to the east and Nea Anchialos to the south. Volos is located in the north of Macedonia. It’s made up of many towns and villages, including Makrinitsa and Portaria.
Volos is a major port city in Greece and features ferry and hydrofoil connections to the nearby islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos. It also offers direct routes to various cities in Europe.
History
Demetrias, Pagasae, and Iolcos, once historical cities in Greece, now all fall within the modern-day borders of Volos. Demetrias was founded in 293 BC by Demetrius Poliorcete, King of Macedon. Iolcus is also one of many Homeric references as the homeland of the Greek hero Jason who set sail for the Golden Fleece with Argo-kor-gous aboard. To the west of Volos lie the Neolithic settlements of Dimini and Sesklo. They have ruins worth visiting for a look at some of their ancient locations. Dimini is a smaller, older village with ruins dating back to 4000-1200 BC, and Sesklo is estimated to be 6000 years old. With an estimated 5000-year history, the mound of Kastro/Palaia in western Volos is home to Bronze Age settlements. Many Linear B tablets have been found and some identify a couple of the royal family members that lived there.
As a result of the Byzantine conquest of Thessaly, Volos was captured by the Byzantine general John Monomachos. Its name is derived from Slavic origin, which appears to be from “Golъ”. Different people have very different opinions about the origins of words in different languages. Since Greek was added to this list, there have been theories based on Greek roots that support a throw or piece of land origin but some scholars consider the theory to be a lost cause. The first reference to the name in modern times was found in 1540.
Medieval walls trace the fortress walls of ancient Iolkus, and many remnants of the old city are still intact in the medieval citadel.
After first being conquered by the Serbs, Thessaly fell under the rule of Nikephoros II Orsini and then Simeon Uroš. After a brief period of Serbian rule, John Uroš took it over and reigned for the next three years. After the death of the aforementioned, Thessaly was occupied by the Byzantines for twenty years before being conquered by the Ottomans in 1373.
Geography
Volos is the administrative center of the Magnesia regional unit. They have many barricades that separate their city areas such as rivers, mountains, and woodlands.
Three rivers/mountain torrents of water all rise from mount Pelion and cross the city, eventually flowing down into a large body of water. Urban geography is created unusually. The Anavros River, which soars over Jason’s Pass and divides the Nea Demetriada district from the rest of Athens, is also a dividing line. The river, which is short and shallow throughout its course, constitutes the natural lung of the city. It flows through Volos and Athens, forming the boundary between these major municipalities of Attica. Xirias is the largest torrent of the Nea Ionia metropolitan urban area and passes through Volos.
Climate
Volos has a climate that is typically neither particularly high nor extremely low. Volos enjoys warm weather year-round and is privileged to have mountains surrounding them.
Education
Many students come to Volos to study because this center of education is centrally located. This makes it convenient in case you want to visit other parts of Greece while taking your classes. The Agricultural, Engineering, and Humanities faculties are based in Volos and they contribute to the city’s academic, economic, and cultural development. The faculties of the city go in different buildings with the Departments of Engineering in “Pedion Areos”, the School of Design and Architecture in “Aggelou Promata” and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in Volos. Fytoko is somewhat of a learning destination for students, as there are a lot of universities housed within its confines including the School of Agricultural Sciences. Aside from Greek students, it attracts many Erasmus and other international exchange programs.

Economy
Volos is one of the most industrialized provincial cities of Greece because it’s the strategic location between the largest population centers of the country (Athens – Thessaloníki) and its port. The industry is intensely specialized in steel production, along with many other electronics-related businesses. METKA, SIDENOR, and Hellenic Steel Industry are three major steel producers that are in the process of development in the industrial areas of Volos. One of Lafarge’s cement facilities operates on a scale unprecedented in the industry, with a total capacity exceeding 7.4 million tons and a private port next to the city. Volos is also active in the research sector, hosting the Institute of Bio-Economy and Agri-Technology (IBO), one of the five Institutes of the Center for Research and Technology – Hellas (CERTH).
Culture
As the first traces of culture in Europe, the region of Volos is rich in history. It has been on our radar since ancient times and evidence shows it to be one of the earliest sites with signs related to Neolithic culture. Evidence also indicates that these particular villages were only part of a much bigger settlement system which showed evidence of agriculture & trade.
With proximity to Volos, you also have the ancient Dimitrias, where Dimitrios Poliorkitis built his theater in 294-2 AC. Today, the ancient remains are preserved inside an ancient theater. Excavations have been found in the area of Goritsa hill, dating back to the earliest days of Christianity. Likewise, a structure dating from around 1486 is present in Nea Anchialos by the name of Volos’s old castle and is open to visitors.
Volos is a city of diverse Greek trades, with its industrial development encouraging many people to move to the city. Greece’s industrial and financial revolution also propelled cultural and social evolution. Volos acquired its Municipal Theater in 1894, and later its Gymnastics Club in 1908. Volos became home to the first Labor Union in 1904.
