Wavre Overview
Located in Wallonia, Wavre is the capital of the province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium. A valley called Dyle surrounds Wavre. “Wavriens” and “Wavriennes” are the names given to most residents who speak French as their mother tongue. Among the districts of the municipality are Bierges, Limal, and Wavre.
History
Ancient Roman foundations, complete with an entrance and many rooms, were found near Wavre. In the 3rd and 4th centuries, Germanic invasions ravaged this part of Gaul, and it was not until 1050 that Wavre was mentioned for the first time as a dependency of the County of Leuven, part of the Brabant pagus. Some years later, the counts ceded the chapel built near the former Gallo-Roman villa to the Affligem Abbey. At the crossroads of the Brussels-Namur and Nivelles-Leuven roads, the budding town of Brussels-Namur already had a market. The town received its city charter from Duke Henry I of Brabant in 1222. In the same period, Affligem Abbey expanded its Wavre holdings into a convent, attracting pilgrims from a wide area.
In retaliation for Wavre’s support for Brabant’s revolt against Austria, Duke Albert of Saxony took the city and pillaged it on Mar 8, 1489. The city suffered one disaster after another in the following years until the beginning of the 18th century. During the period between 1504 and 1700, Wavre would experience several debilitating crises, either as a result of foreign armies (e.g., the Spanish in 1604), epidemics (1624–1625, 1668), or significant fires (Apr 28, 1695, and Jul 17, 1714) caused by Louis XIV’s wars. During the 18th century, Wavre was relatively prosperous, but the Brabant Revolution against Austria brought trouble around 1790. A French army captured Fleurus in 1794, resulting in the city becoming a French city. Like many of its neighbors, the town was subjected to compulsory conscription, curtailed religious freedoms, and dissolved administrative offices.
Infrastructure
Wavre hosts the Belgian broadcasting society’s Wavre Transmitter, which broadcasts on shortwave, mediumwave, F.M., and T.V. A guyed steel framework mast is used as an aerial for medium wave, and the structure is the third tallest in Belgium. The FM and T.V. aerials are mounted on a free-standing lattice tower. A storm destroyed the main transmission mast for T.V. on Oct 13, 1983.
In Basse-Wavre (“lower Wavre”), a suburb east of the city center and lower down the Dyle is Basse-Wavre railway station (Gare de Basse-Wavre).

Rebuilt immediately, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste has a predominantly Gothic style, though elements like the choir were rebuilt after another fire in 1695.
Hôtel de Ville
Wavre’s town hall is housed in the Baroque church of a Carmelite convent, built in 1662. Upon its completion, the convent was destroyed by fire in 1695, rebuilt in 1720, then suppressed in 1797, when the city took it over.
Le Maca
Sculpted in 1962 by Jean Godart, Le Maca represents the famous irreverent spirit of the people of Wavre. A bronze statue of a boy showing his buttocks climbing the wall in front of Wavre’s Hôtel de Ville might seem a little “cheeky.”
