Wiesbaden is a city in Hesse, Germany. Its neoclassical Kurhaus now houses a convention center and a casino found on its grounds. The Kurpark was designed by the Englishman John Stevens and was created in 1852. The market Church on Schlossplatz is flanked by the City Palace, a neoclassical building that houses State Parliament. The Museum displays paintings by Alexej von Jawlensky and exhibits on natural history.
Located north of the Rhine river, Wiesbaden is near Mainz, the largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. Frankfurt am Main is located about 38 kilometers (23.6 mi) east. The Taunus Mountains are to the north of the city and trend in a northeasterly direction.
Wiesbaden has a temperate-oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb). The winters are cold and have average annual temperatures between 5C and 30C, while the summers are warm with around 20 to 30 degree Celsius.
Present-day Wiesbaden exhibits evidence of settlement. In the Neolithic era, they were occupied continuously, and in 6 AD there was already a Roman military installed. Wiesbaden has thermal springs that inspired Pliny the Elder – famous for his books on natural history from Ancient Rome. They were renowned for their pools and exceptional health benefits. He was likely referring to it as the mineral source of red hair dye, which was an increasingly popular trend in my period.
The Romans first mention Aquae Mattiacorum in 121. The Mattiaci were a Germanic tribe and lived close by at the time. In the Geography of Claudius Ptolemy, there is a town called Mattiacum. Along with this town, Limes Germanicus was designed in Wiesbaden.
The capital of the province of Germania Superior, Mogontiacum (present-day Mainz), was home to 2 Roman legions and connected by a bridge at the present-day borough of Mainz-Kastel (Roman “castellum”), a strong fort.
In 260, a coalition of Germanic tribes known as the Alamanni captured the fort and held it for some time. In 370 when the Romans and Alamanni were allied together, they gained control of Wiesbaden again. This allowed them to outmaneuver their opponent who was formerly in charge of defense.
After World War II Hesse, a state in Germany was established. Wiesbaden, a city in the state, became its capital and Frankfurt am Main became another important city. Despite having a significantly less population than Frankfurt Main Wiesbaden does have its strengths and will continue to grow as an important economic and financial center. There is a persistent rumor that the U.S. Army Air Force spared the town intending to turn it into a postwar HQ, but USAAF sources claim this to be a myth, arguing that Wiesbaden’s economic and strategic importance simply did not justify this project. Wiesbaden was home to the Headquarters, of U.S. Air Forces, Europe from 1953 to 1973.
American military presence in Wiesbaden has been around since World War II, with the U.S. 1st Armored Division headquartered on the Wiesbaden Army Airfield until 1974 when it moved to Fort Bliss. Wiesbaden is now home to the U.S. Army Europe Headquarters and Mission Command Center, which moved from Germany for better access to resources.
Wiesbaden consists of 26 boroughs. Five are in the center, and 21 were formed in four phases from 1926 to 1977. The former Mainz suburbs on the right bank of the river Rhine have belonged to Wiesbaden since 1945.

Though Wiesbaden is primarily a winter resort with quite a few attractions to offer, it has pockets of high-industrial and commercial activity. Companies like Abbott, DXC, and Ferrari have their German headquarters there. International companies like Norwegian Cruise Line and Australian IT also have their European headquarters in Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden is known for many things, but German companies are no exception. Several of them have their headquarters within their borders and the “Industriepark Kalle-Albert” is one of them. Now you can find out more about these and many other companies! With over 80 companies in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, Hoechst Park is the largest park in Germany. The park was founded by the chemical company Hoechst AG.
Wiesbaden has three main attractions, the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Kurhaus in Friedrich-von-Thiersch-Saal, and the Max Reger Hall. The Wiesbadener Knabenchor, Schiersteiner Kantorei, and Chor von St. Bonifatius are known in the region and even internationally as excellent choirs.
Wiesbaden is famous for its Sekt, German champagne. It was also a favorite place in the 18th and 19th centuries when Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johannes Brahms, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky all visited here.
But I don’t think you’d want to visit this city located slightly west of Frankfurt. It’s full of impressive architecture and culture, but what it lacks are activities that are worth your time.
