Wilhelmshaven Overview
In Lower Saxony, Germany, Wilhelmshaven is a city on the coast. Jade Bight is a North Sea bay located on the town’s western side, and its population is 76,089. In addition to being Germany’s primary military port, Wilhelmshaven is the center of the “Jade Bay” business region (which has around 330,000 residents).
A significant tourism industry in the area is based on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park (part of the Wattenmeer UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site).
History
Built before 1383, the Siebethsburg castle was a pirate stronghold; it was destroyed by the Hanseatic League in 1433. The Kingdom of Prussia planned a fleet and a harbor for the North Sea four centuries later. As a cousin of Frederick William IV, Prince Adalbert of Prussia arranged the Jade Treaty (Jade-Vertrag) in 1853 with the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, whereby Oldenburg ceded 3.13 km2 (1.21 sq mi) of its territory at the Jade Bight to Prussia under the Jade Treaty. King William I of Prussia (later also German Emperor) founded the town in 1869 as an exclave of the Province of Hanover and a naval base for Prussia’s growing fleet. Oldenburg remained the owner of the entire hinterland of the city.
Wilhelmshaven developed a shipbuilding yard called Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven. The “pocket battleship” Admiral Graf Spee was launched at Wilhelmshaven on 30 June 1934.
Wilhelmshaven and Rüstringen merged in 1937, becoming part of the Free State of Oldenburg as Wilhelmshaven.
