Witten Overview

With nearly 100,000 people living in it, Witten is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Geography

Witten is situated in a region of the Ruhr in Western Germany, near the city of Essen.

Boroughs

Witten has eight districts: Nord-2, Verster-1, Süd-4, Vinnumtangen 3, and so on. Each district has a number so it can easily be found in the phone book if you need to contact a specific district.

Population

95,876 (December 2020)

Climate

Witten’s summer weather is warm with long dry days and cool, mostly cloudy nights. It gets colder in the winter and there are a lot of cold windy days. Because of this variation, you can be outdoors all year round if you’re up for it! You should plan to visit Witten this time of year. The weather is great and you can enjoy everything that the city has to offer, like beautiful flowers and mild temperatures.

History

Witten, Germany is a historic medieval city with a long history that dates back to 1214 AD. It was once part of the Abbey of Herbede and became incorporated into the city in 1975. The borough Herbede, which was integrated into the modern-day city in 1946, dates back to 851 AD and has historically been a mining town since 1578. In 1975 Witten was included in the administrative district Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis, and it is now its biggest city. In that same year, Witten also became more populated than the 100,000 mark, becoming a “large city”.

Politics

In the local elections of 2004, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) had 24 seats on the council. It was followed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 18 and the Alliance 90/The Greens with 7, the WBG (a conservative list) and Free Democrats with four each, FLW (also a conservative list) with three, and National Democratic Party two, and the PDS/WAL (socialists) and AUF Witten (a left-wing list) with one each.

For the first time in its history, the council was led by a female mayor, Sonja Leidemann from 2009-2020. Her mandate was unfortunately lost to Lars König from the CDU.

Transport

Witten is connected to the Autobahn network by the A 43 and A 44 motorways. It also has a central station, so it can readily be accessed through train transportation via Deutsche Bahn with connections to Hagen, Bochum, Essen, Siegen, Wuppertal, Düsseldorf, and more! BOGESTRA is a joint venture between the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, which are connected by a tram line. Trams ran daily in Witten from mid-December until they were discontinued on January 18th because of construction on the Bahnhofstraße. When the new track to Langendreer is completed (September 2020), people will be able to access it via transit routes of Bochum-Langendreer (309) or via transit routes of Wattenscheid-Höntrop which includes the main station of Bochum (310).

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Witten with its two lions was first mentioned in 1283 and owned by the founding family of the town. Their slogan was: “Sigillum Hermanni de Wittene”. Because of its long history, that was the only one in the Ruhr area, that wasn’t banned by the Allies after WWII.

  12. Bethaus der Bergleute

    – The last building of its kind in the Ruhr area is a prayer house for miners working in the Muttental collieries. The building dates to 1830, and almost 200 years ago when workers came here from various northern cities to work as miners, they would pray for a safe, accurate day’s work.
  13. Freizeitbad Heveney
