Approximately 60 kilometers (40 miles) between Worms and Frankfurt am Main, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. As of 2015, it had an estimated 82,000 residents.
The Romans founded worms as one of the oldest cities in northern Europe. The first part of the Nibelungenlied refers to this period, written in the early fifth century when it was the capital of the Burgundians.
Worms have been a Roman Catholic diocese since 614 and were an essential palatinate under Charlemagne. Worms Cathedral is one of the most magnificent examples of Romanesque architecture in Germany and one of the imperial cathedrals. The city of Worms prospered as an imperial free city in the High Middle Ages. The Diet of Worms (commonly known as the Diet of Worms) concluded with the Edict of Worms, declaring Martin Luther a heretic among more than a hundred imperial diets held at Worms. In the Middle Ages, Worms was also a cultural center for Jewish life as one of the ShUM-cities. UNESCO inscribed its Jewish sites (along with those in Speyer and Mainz) on the World Heritage List in 2021.
In addition to being a major industrial center, the city is known as the origin of Liebfraumilch wine. Fodder, chemicals, and metal goods are among its other industries.
Worms is situated between Ludwigshafen and Mainz on the west bank of the Rhine. The Primm and the Eisbach flow into the Rhine at the northern and southern edges of the city, respectively.
Rhine Valley has a temperate winter climate and pleasant summer weather. The surrounding area receives less rain than average. It is common for snow to melt quickly during the winter since there is little accumulation.
Worms was once a Celtic city called Borbetomagus, which probably meant “water meadow.” In later times, it was conquered by the Germanic Vangiones. A small troop of infantry and cavalry was garrisoned there from 14 B.C. onwards under the command of Drusus. In honor of the then-emperor and the local tribe, the Romans renamed Augusta Vangionum. Despite this, the name did not catch on, and the German Worms and Latin Wormatia replaced Borbetomagus; the city’s name was still written Wormbs until the late modern era. As the garrison grew, it developed a Roman street plan, a forum, and temples dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, Minerva (whose temple later became the cathedral), and Mars.
Among the exhibits in the archaeological museum are Roman inscriptions, altars, and votive offerings, along with one of Europe’s largest collections of Roman glass. It was in the south quarter of the town that potters worked. Amphorae fragments contain olive oil from Hispania Baetica, likely transported by sea and then up the Rhine.
In 411–413 AD, Roman usurper Jovinus established himself as a puppet-emperor in Borbetomagus with the help of King Gunther of the Burgundians, who had settled in the area between the Rhine and Moselle some years earlier. Under Gunther (also known as Gundicar), the city became the capital of the Burgundian kingdom. Several artifacts from this early Burgundian kingdom have survived since it was destroyed in 436 by a combined Roman and Hun force (led by Attila). As a result of Burgundian raids against Roman settlements, the combined Romano-Hunnic army destroyed the Burgundian army at Worms (436), killing King Gunther. A total of 20,000 people are believed to have died. In modern-day Savoy, the Romans led the survivors southward to the Roman district of Sapaudia. The story of this war inspired Nibelungenlied. The city appears in the Peutinger Map dating from the fourth century.
In addition to being a major industrial center, the city is known as the origin of Liebfraumilch wine. Fodder, chemicals, and metal goods are among its other industries.
“Vormatia” means “settlement in a watery area” – yeah, I didn’t take Latin! The city isn’t named after worms, but its name comes from Latin. In German, the letter “W” is pronounced as the English “V,” thus “Worms.”
