Wuppertal Overview

Wuppertal is a city in western Germany. It’s known for its Schwebebahn, a suspension monorail dating from 1901 that connects the first and last station of the city on a shaft sunk into an abandoned mine. The Von der Heydt Museum has works by impressionists and Dutch Masters. The Museum of Early Industrialization displays textile machinery and steam engines, including a piece by Friedrich Engels, co-founder of Marxist theory. The Waldfrieden Sculpture Park houses several modern sculptures.

History

Wuppertal, geographically speaking, was formed by merging the industrial cities of Barmen and Elberfeld along with the communities of Vohwinkel, Ronsdorf, Cronenberg, Langerfeld, and Beyenburg. Small German town, with a population of around 100,000 in 1930. The name Barmen-Elberfeld was changed in a 1930 referendum to Wuppertal.

The city of Düsseldorf is famously known for its valley, which is home to a river that cascades into a residential and commercial area. Its highest point, aptly named the “Lichtscheid” because it’s lit up at night with lights, stands at 351 meters above sea level. In 1850, the North German Industrial Center of Elberfeld and Barmen was formed as a result of the merging of the two cities. By 1860, it had become an important urban center with the “Wupper-Town” industrial area becoming dominant. Around 1900, this conurbation was sometimes surpassed by Cologne, Düsseldorf, and the Ruhr area. However, its terrain is much more favorable than that of these previously mentioned locations.

From July 5, 1933, to January 19, 1934, the Kemna concentration camp was established in Wuppertal. It was one of the early Nazi concentration camps for people who opposed their political platform. Wuppertal is famous as an important place of resistance in Germany. The camp was established in a former factory on the Wupper, one of two hills that defines the city. Although it was promulgated in Nazi Germany, the declaration of the Barmen Church represented Protestantism’s resistance to Nazi ideology. The German Christians invited God to work through them and then had the gall to say that they were doing God’s work. They corrupted the church government by making it subservient to the state, combined Nazi ideology with Christianity, and introduced a dictatorship into the German Protestant churches that led to their eventual downfall.
