Wurzburg Overview
Würzburg is a beautiful city in Germany that has impressive architecture and plenty of cultural sights to see. You can find the Bavarian State Museum, Residenz palace, and Venetian fresco by Tiepolo all within one 1-mile of each other. Home to numerous wine bars, cellars, and wineries, Würzburg is the center of the Franconian wine country. It has a distinctive bocksbeutel, which consists of bottles with flattened round shapes.
Early and medieval history
A Bronze Age (Urnfield culture) refuge castle, the Celtic Segodunum, and later a Roman fort, stood on the hill known as the Leistenberg. It was at this point that it could first be seen from Marienberg Fortress. Celtic people settled in the region, but they were displaced by the Alamanni, who arrived in 41 CE. The Franks came later and founded the city of Würzburg. It became Christianized through Irish missionaries Kilian, Kolonat, and latterly by Pepin II of Herstal. The city of Verterburg is mentioned in the donation of Duke Hedan II on 1 May 704. It was listed as an important settlement during the 10th-11th century under the name Uburzis in the Ravenna Cosmography. The name of the city originated from the Latinized root herb meaning “spring, season”.
The city’s seal has been around for centuries and, since 1237, has always depicted the cathedral and a portrait of Saint Kilian. Today, we can still see this saying on the city’s coat of arms. The city adopted a new coat of arms in 1532. The phrase “Or and gules” (orange-red) is important because that is the color of the coat of arms, described later on.
The early diocese of Würzburg went from being the first to the largest in Franconia during the 12th century. The church had a secular fiefdom of many estates, which eventually spread into Eastern Franconia. The city played host to several important Imperial Dinners, including one in 1180, during which Henry the Lion was excluded from the Empire for 3 years and his duchy Bavaria was handed to Otto of Wittelsbach. This led to the mass murder of Jews.
Würzburg was once the capital of Bavaria and as such, one of the oldest cities in Germany. The first church on the site of present-day Würzburg Cathedral was built as early as 788 and was consecrated that same year by Charlemagne. The current building began construction in 1040 and took more than 400 years to be finished. The University of Würzburg also had many conflicts with the monarchy during its early years. Its residents revolted numerous times and were able to gain their independence in 1582.
In 1397, King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia visited the city and promised its people the status of a free Imperial City. However, he was forced to revoke these promises by German ruling princes only after they beat him. In 1400 AD, the citizens of Bergheim were decisively defeated by the troops of Bishop Arno in the Battle and lost control of their city permanently until its dissolution in 1477.
Geography
Würzburg is set on the banks of the river Main in Lower Franconia in Bavaria. The heart of the town lies on its Eastern bank — it’s not a city, but it makes up for it by being surrounded by regions and towns.
Würzburg has an area of 87.6 square kilometers and is located on the southern edge of the Franconian Forest, just above the Eure River.
Out of the total municipal area, in 2007, 30% were buildings and 27.9% were fields and grasslands. 15.5% was forestland and 12.7% was green space for the city. The remaining 5 % was made up of roads which totaled 5%. The land is mostly water at 1%.

Economy
Würzburg’s most well-known feature is the Julius-Maximilians University. It’s also known for having many jobs in the local government and private sector, prominent ones being Brose Fahrzeugteile, Koenig & Bauer, and Zöglinge Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Schule (an elementary school). With its mild climate and a long wine-making tradition, Würzburg is also the capital of Franconia’s wine region. There you can taste wines native to the area, among others made from the local Silvaner grape. The local brewery, Würzburger Hofbräu produces a very well-known pilsner beer too.”
In March 1952, Nick di Camillo opened the first pizza restaurant in Germany. In addition to this success, he was given an honor by the Italian government.
In 2017, the GDP per capita was €62,229. This places the district 13th out of 96 districts (rural and urban) in Bavaria (overall average: €46,698).
Sports
Dirk Nowitzki was born in Würzburg, Germany. When he was young, he played for a local basketball team and then eventually joined the Dallas Mavericks NBA team. The German national team players, Nowitzki included, were brought up in Würzburg from their early days of development. As of 2016, the basketball club has been playing in European hoop competitions.
Würzburg is also home to the football teams Würzburger Kickers and Würzburger FV playing in the 2. Bundesliga and Bavarian Football League respectively.
SV Würzburg plays in the German Water Polo League, an athletic competition for team sports. They’re a club that’s active in water polo, which is a sport that has teams competing using swimming strokes.
