Zalău is inhabited by “Free Dacians,” 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) away from Porolissum, a well-preserved Roman Castrum with an imposing fortress, a theater, temples, houses, and a customs house. Along the so-called “Salt Route,” Zalău was a crossing point between Central Europe and Transylvania.

In this area, archaeology has revealed evidence of human existence since the Neolithic, around 4,000 years ago. The year was 6500. Several Dacian coins found in the city’s central area and on Valea Mâţii, west of the town, along with critical Roman items, are evidence of free Dacian continuity and the development of economic relations with Porolissum, an ancient Roman city.

During Trajan’s conquest of Dacia (106), the Roman Empire’s border stood just five kilometers from the city atop the Meseş Mountains. The Dacian tribes lived just north of the border, in the actual Zalău city area, and to the east, southeast (of Meseş Mountains) were Roman border fortifications, towers, walls, ditches, and defense sides.

Around the year 1200, Zalău appeared in the “Gesta Hungarorum,” also called the “Chronicle of Anonymous” (probably a notary for King Béla III of Hungary). According to this source, a Zalău settlement was established there as early as 900. Later, Zalău was known as Villa Ziloc in 1220, Zylac in 1246, Zylah in 1282, Zyloh and Oppidum Zylah in 1318, Zila in 1601, Zilahu in 1808, Sziláj / Szilágyi in 1839, Szilaju in 1850, and Zalău / Sziláju / Waltenberg in 1854. In 1246, following the great Mongol invasion, which destroyed the city in 1241, Zalău came under the administration of the Catholic Bishopric of Oradea. When Zalău became part of the Principality of Transylvania in 1542, the trusteeship was maintained.

Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary and Bohemia, recognized Zalău as a market town for the first time on 1 August 1473 (oppidum Zilah – Zilah fort), which freed the city from county control, granted its citizens free trade rights, and gave it a greater degree of economic autonomy.

By the end of the 16th century, the city had an independent administration composed of 33 senators (one of whom was the mayor), a notary, a registrar, and a treasurer.
