Zografos / Zografou Overview
Zografou is a suburb of approximately 71,000 in the eastern part of the Athens agglomeration. It was named after the Greek politician Ioannis Zografos and lies to the east of Mount Hymettus.
Geography
Zografou is an inner suburb of Athens and has been a municipality in its entirety since 1984. Its size has been 8.517 km2 since 1988, but it extends as far east as the forested Hymettus mountain. The built-up area of Zografou is continuous until the municipal borders are reached. A large campus of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is situated in Ano Ilisia, the easternmost quarter of Zografou. The name derives from the river Ilisos, which starts at St Eleousa, now on the University campus. Another quarter of Zografou is Goudi, which is in the northwestern part of the municipality. Zografou Church is one of the most popular in Athens and is consecrated to St. Therapontas. Hymettus was chosen as its location so the church could be seen and visited from a great distance. This helps to make it one of the most recognizable churches in Athens.

Zografou is served by bus lines 140 (Polygono – Glyfada), 220 (Ano Ilisia – Akadimia), 221 (Panepistimioupoli – Akadimia), 230 (Akropoli – Zografou), 235 (Zografou – Akadimia), 250 (Panepistimioupoli – Evangelismos station), 608 (Galatsi – Akadimia – Nekr. Zografou), 622 (Goudi – Ano Galatsi) and 815 (Goudi – Tavros). The eastern beltway Motorway 64 passes through the municipality.
Zografou will have 3 metro stations – Ilissia, Gardenia Place and Goudi.
History
With the Ottoman departure from this area in the 1830s, ownership of the property came into Ioannis Koniaris’ possession. He was the Mayor of Athens from 1851 to 1854.
In 1902, Eleni Vournazos sells 1,250 acres of land in the Kouponia/Goudi area to Ioannis Zografos and his wife. He was also a Member of Parliament for the Nationalist Party and a professor at the university. Of course, cities have been divided up into plots so that people can build houses on them. Within just 10 years, 100 houses had been built. That same year the foundations for the Church of Saint Theraponta were also settled on this land.
In 1929, Athens became overcrowded and they split a piece of land and made it into its community. This area was called Zografou. Ano Ilisia was incorporated into Prespes as its first municipal president in 1945 and was elevated to the municipality a year later.
