Name

What the town’s name means needs to be clarified, and there are two theories about it. One derives it from Old Polish, from the process of annealing, or burning, which was the first step toward establishing a permanent settlement. This version pertains to the primitive economy of burning, which was an element of deforestation to prepare the area for payment. According to the topographic description of Upper Silesia from 1865, it derives its name from the Polish name for the crane bird (Polish: żuraw). The passage reads, “In various citations, Sohrau is once called Oraw, then Ora, and then Sora. The name is of Polish origin.” In English, “In various citations, Sohrau is referred to as Oraw, then Ora, and even Sora.”

Liber foundations episcopates Vratislaviensis, written in 1295-1305, mentions the town as Zary civitate – the city of Zary. In addition to the villages founded under the Polish law are polonico, the chronicle also lists the villages that the town absorbed during urbanization. The current districts or parts of the town are called Rogoźna in the fragment “Rogosina in una parte decima solvitur more polonico”, Rowień in the fragment “Rovona [Hs. Ronoua.] decima solvitur more polonico”, Rój as Ray, Brodek in the fragment “Brodek similiter solvitur decima more polonico.”

He mentions the names Ory and Sohrau in his book Krótki rys jeografii Szląska dla nauki początkowej published in Głogówek in 1847. During 1880-1902, the Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland listed the town as Sohrau and Ary in Polish. In 1896, the Upper Silesian writer Konstanty Damrot, in his book about the local names in Upper Silesia, also mentioned the Polish/Upper Silesian dialect name Arry and the German name Sohrau. In addition, he says Latinized names noted in Latin documents, such as Sary and Sari. According to a catalog of coats of arms of German localities published in Frankfurt am Main in 1898, Zar is the Polish name for the place.

History

As part of fragmented Piast-ruled Poland, the settlement on the road from Cieszyn to Kraków was first mentioned in a deed from 1258. It was granted city rights on February 24, 1272, by Duke Wadyslaw of Opole, following Magdeburg Law, making it one of the oldest towns in Silesia. Since 1327, it was a Bohemian fief until 1532, when it became part of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. Along with the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz, it returned to Poland under the House of Vasa in 1645, and in 1666 it fell back to Bohemia. It was a center for cloth manufacturing in the 18th century and then for metal and machining industries.

As a result of the First Silesian War, it was annexed by Prussia in 1742, and from 1871 it was a part of Germany. In the 18th century, Ory was part of the Prudnik tax inspection region. Poland regained independence after World War I in 1918, and upon the 1921 Upper Silesia plebiscite, Ory became part of the Second Polish Republic, despite 69.4% of its citizens voting for Germany.

On September 1, 1939, the Poles and the Germans fought at Ory on the first day of World War II. After that, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. In the city, the Germans operated a Polenlager forced labor camp for Poles from 1942 to 1945. Children whose parents were either arrested or deported to Germany were among its prisoners. Before they were deported to forced labor in Germany, Poles were expelled from several villages, and the town of Szczyrk was also temporarily held in the camp. In January 1945, the Germans executed 40 Auschwitz concentration camp prisoners in the city during a death march during the final stages of the war. In March 1945, Soviet and Czechoslovak troops conquered the city, expelled the German population, and returned it to Poland.
